Default Dems Push for End date of Iraq War

Dems labor for sure majority on pullout

Quote:
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON - On the eve of a critical vote, House Democrats labored Thursday to lock down a majority behind a Sept. 1, 2008, deadline for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq, the sternest test yet for a determined new majority eager to challenge President Bush.

"If it comes off, it's a superb accomplishment," said Rep. Barney Frank (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass., as the party's leaders cajoled liberals who want an even faster timetable and moderates fearful of tying the hands of the commander in chief and generals in the field.
Sounds like a bad idea, naming an official end date for the war. It almost gaurantees a failure, don't you think?

Personally, I want to see our troops come home, but at the same time, it would be nice to see a decisive victory in Iraq.

The deadline is a year and a half away, and could always be adjusted based on events on the ground. If we haven't shown serious progress by then, we're not going to.

I truly hope the insurgents take up Caraveggio's suggestion. If they lay low for 18 months, we win. Because we'll spend those 18 months establishing security, rebuilding infrastructure, training more Iraqi troops and finding and confiscating weapons caches.

Default ?

It's already working. My friends' son....a Marine right in the thick of things there in the Baghdad area.....has said they are having a hard time getting the enemy to engage.

But we don't need to be giving a date certain. It only harms us. The President has every desire to get us out of there as soon as possible. And that's good enough for me.

But then it would be just another empty gesture.

Was that any different then Bush's plan? in what way is that not the same?
oh, forgive me, I forgot, it's not good if a dem did not think it up.

With that said, it's the same, and still does not come with a plan to make sure events on the ground get better.

You Dems surprise me.

Whatever this president has done has been good enough for you. That is your problem, no matter how many times this administration lies, fails and even destroys the principles of this nation, it is good enough for you.

Once again, a thread is turned into a rant against JP5 instead of the topic of the thread.

JP5 is from Texas just like Bush.
Do you really think he will give you an unbiased opinion?
That's like Bush himself telling the "truth."
Make you wonder if this is the attitude of most people in Texas.
I wonder who they will vote for in 2008?
All the candidates (Rep. and Dem.) are campaigning on the platform of getting the troops out of Iraq.
Make you wonder how these pro war advocates are going to vote next year.

The topic of this thread is Democrats push for definitive end date to the Iraq war.

It is not about:
-JP5 (Who isn't a "he" by the way)
-Bias
-People in Texas
-Voter leanings for 2008
