Default Senate war bill features $20B in pork

Quote:
The Senate bill is $18 billion more than President Bush requested for military operations. The House bill, which passed last week, exceeded the administration’s request by $21 billion and included money for spinach growers, peanut storage and citrus farmers.

Congress seems to have a rather unique interpretation of war spending. Nice to see that they are using the "mandate" from the last elections to give Bush all he wanted...and then some.

Thanks for the funding Nancy.

Quote:
“Maybe this is what Democrats mean by ‘phased redeployment’,” Hart said.

Senate Appropriations Chairman Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., Monday defended the extra spending, describing it as “common sense and good economics.”

[...] The $100 million for the political party conventions — $50 million for the Democratic convention in Denver and $50 million for the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn. — is included in a section described as “Katrina recovery, veterans’ care and for other purposes.”

heh heh heh... "Katrina Recover Veterans Care". Yeah, thats not a stretch at all.

Quote:
The Senate Appropriations Committee noted that the committee provided roughly $50 million to help defray the costs of policing the 2004 conventions. A senate staffer pointed out, however, that the 2004 funding earned approval through the normal appropriations process rather than the less-stringent “emergency” process permitted for the current bill.

[...] And it includes $3.5 million for the Capitol’s guided–tour program and $20 million for, in part, insect infestation control in Nevada, thanks to Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Guided tours...now THATS what I call an emergency Harry.

Neocons love the Iraqis!

Willing to spend thousands of lives and trillion$ on iraqis in Iraq but when it comes to spending a few billion of our money on Americans in the USA, they start crying n' complaining.

Yes, the Iraqis are more important than guided tours of teh white house. Especially in an emergency funding bill. Sorry.

Why does your pork have to be in this emergency funding bill? Cant you make another bill called the "Democrat Pork" bill or something?

wow....this is huge news. A political party putting pork into a bill! This sort of thing is unheard of. Or is just more of the same. Like there's a real difference between the Republicans and Democrats...yeah right. They act exactly the same and we shouldn't expect the Dems to be so much better than the Repubs. The Republocrats will continue to behave in this manner until their power is threatened and the are held to the will of the people. Both parties are currently bad for America, neither are constrained, neither are accountable, neither take responsibility for their actions. This is just more of the status quo, nothing more.

B....but I thought that happened last election? What happened to the Democrat mandate?

And Americans like it that way. Thats why they keep voting them back into power.

As long as they continue to give us what we want, no, you will hear no complaining from me.
