I know it's relevent but I think the media [certainly British] have gone a little overboard on his mental health run in. Lets face it, you have to be pretty crazy to do that anyway so I do'nt see what the big deal is. A lot of young people get admitted these days with psychosis or other related problems so I just think it adds to the stigma of mental health, which I think is a shame.

Just watching Chris Mattews on MSNBC and he's about to pee in his pants that NBC got this material. He's sounding like an advertisement for NBC News by saying...."NBC News tonight at 6:30pm will show parts of this material." Evidently, NBC "negotiated" with the authorities and got to keep "copies." I guess NBC's ratings are more important than the authorities FIRST analyzing the contents.

Yeah I don't think I like the idea of the media giving this loon a second of press time. Just gives other crazies incentive to act similarly.
Heard that a Virginia judge deemed him mentally incompetent at some point recently. Not sure what VT does with this information though. Not sure what they could do.

nbc is a liberal station, which cho was obviously familiar with. perhaps if this news source didn't exist, this massacre would have never occurred...
and yeah, pretty ridiculous that they would say they're going to show this material. of course, we all know the authorities didn't review the material before deciding to let them keep it.

The big media need to keep out of it because they have a tendency on focusing on all the wrong things... and running the issue into the ground to the point where it is desensitizing.
His mental health was obviously an issue... but not in such a broad and simple way as the media make it out to be. I think there is more to be learned by focusing on what went on inside the killer's head but the media... they just aren't good at it... mainly because it's only the sensational parts that interest the masses. As far as the media honoring victims... I don't really even understand that beyond the first day or two. The media are a big, impersonal institution that exist for turning events into money. I don't see how it can be comforting to turn to these monoliths for their false sympathy... making the suffering of the families into a spectacle... turning the psychology of a killer into the movie of the week instead of something to learn from.

And there DOES need to be debate about what can be done to help these people and protect society. When a guy who has been determined to be mentally ill and a dnager to others is allowed to buy guns, there is a problem.
I saw the police commending NBC news for thier actions. They have withheld much of the manifesto. If the cops and FBI think they were worth commending, then maybe the right wingers on here need to stop being so quick to blame. I'm sure if he sent it ti Faux news and they behaved the same exact way, they would not be posting this ridiculous BS. Hey right wingers, your ignorant partisianship is showing again. |
