I don't think we are moving toward either so-called extreme. We aren't a theocracy and never will be, especially since the country is slowly moving more secular, and we aren't moving toward fascism because any dictation from the federal government can be reversed and lessened due to term limits and a new official stepping in. When Gerald Ford (may he rest in peace) took over for Richard "hidden liberal" Nixon (Or "shifty eyes", if you prefer), he found a list that Nixon created that was an enemy list (hit list, maybe). When he saw that and was told how Nixon operated, he said (I've been told) "If you need a list to keep track of your enemies, you have too many enemies." And he followed that by running his administration much different, regardless of political ideology, from the way Nixon ran his.
My point is that regardless of how you perceive that one president or administration is running things, changes can, have, and will come with the next president in office. That, in a way, is one balance of power in the government. I think that term limits help protect against extremes.
