Default Taiwan is getting all uppity with China

They are now arming themselves with offensive weapons, instead of just the defensive weapons they have been using in the past.

Quote:
China still regards self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory and sometimes threatens to attack it. Taipei says Beijing has aimed 988 missiles at the island, which lies 160 km (99 miles) off the Chinese coast.

Taiwan last month said for the first time it would fire missiles at Chinese airfields and missile launch sites if China attacked. Previous plans were mostly defensive.

China seems really pissed off about this. The US is "officially" opposed to the build up, but we're not taking any action to stop them. Its almost like we are protesting sarcastically.

I love it of course. Armed democracies are never a bad thing.

When China wants Taiwan back they'll take it. Simple as that.

China says they want Taiwan back now. So why arent they taking it?

Your theory needs some work.

Why? Explain the downside of a strong Taiwan.

I didn't say when the say they want it back. I said when they actually want it back. The two are not the same. Like we SAY we want to stop illegal immigration. But we don't actually want to.

How did you determine that? They certainly look the same to me.

The fact that we are too cheap or lazy to do what it takes to stop it does not necessarily mean we dont want to stop it.

That is like saying that a rape victim must have wanted to be raped, since she was unwilling to kill her attacker. Your logic does not make sense.

Yes, China "actually wants" Taiwan back. But they are unwilling to risk the consequences of taking it back. Those consequences are partly Taiwan's teeth, and the threat of our involvement. I know YOU dont think we will ever actually get involved, but the PRC thinks it's a possibility. Which is why they are whining and bіtching and pouting instead of actually doing anything.

The problem with that are the treaties we have with Taiwan to provide some amount of protection. It would be an ugly ugly mess if China actually makes military moves to take Taiwan back.

Like I said: When they decide they want it back by force they'll take it. Right now their "official" policy is "peaceful reunification and one country, two systems". When and if the policy changes you'll know. And no, we won't do a (*)(*)(*)(*) thing about it. Well, we'll (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) and moan like we do with Syria, Iran and North Korea. But I don't count whining as doing anything. If you do, cool. The reason for the current policy? Like always, it's money. Indirect trade volume between the mainland and Taiwan was a record $100 billion least year. A war is far less profitable. They have their priorities in China. And $$$$ is at the very top. It trumps everything. If they decide it doesn't you'll see it on the news.

Yes it does. If we wanted to stop it we could. Simple as that. Unlike in your terrible analogy, we aren't a helpless rape victim. We can actually kill the rapist. We just don't really want to. Otherwise we would. We want them here. Which is why (hold on to your hat) so many are here.

The PRC doesnt seem to share your opinion. And neither does Bush.

...by cutting off several of our fingers in the process...

You make it sound like it is a simple painless decision...that was the point of my analogy. If the consequences are worse than the rape, then you will accept the rape. That doesnt mean you LIKE being raped.

Show me evidence other than lack of action that leads you to believe we want them here.

If I get into a car wreck, it must mean I WANTED to get into a car wreck. Otherwise I would not have been driving, right?

I propose that we change our laws to fit your novel logic.

Auto accidents are not really accidents, they are deliberate. Because if I didnt want to get into a wreck, I wouldnt be driving. I can prevent any car wreck I get into by simply not driving, so if I get into a wreck, it is because I wanted to get into a wreck.

And if I hit a pedestrian in my car, I need to be prosecuted for murder. Because if I didnt want to hit that Pedestrian, I wouldnt be driving, right?
