What a surprise. China not caring about human rights. Of course they claim it's exaggerated... I just tend not to trust the Chinese government, don't know about you. But in all fairness, it looks like this is a common occurrence when the Olympics come to town... usually not direct... but it still makes you wonder how worth it that dog n' pony show is.

Olympic evictions at Clays Lane PDF Print E-mail
Contributed by julian cheyne Tuesday, 24 May 2005 The University of East London is evicting students from its Park Village estate at Clays Lane, Stratford, East London. The estate is to be handed over to the London Development Agency and will be part of the site for the Olympic Village if London gets the 2012 Olympics. The students are being removed even though the decision on the Olympics won't be made until 6th July and if London doesn't get the Olympics the estate will be let out again through a housing agency. If London does get the Olympics then the LDA says it will demolish the estate within six months even though the rest of the Village site won't be available for construction till 2007. Notice to quit for the students expires on 19th July. The estate consists of two tower blocks and a large number of four or six person houses. It is in perfectly good condition! Have a look for yourselves. http://www.squatter.org.uk/index.php...id=27&Itemid=2 Travellers go to court over eviction to make way for Olympic village · Legal challenge to use Human Rights Act · Residents may launch own action over new location Duncan Campbell Monday March 12, 2007 The Guardian The first major contests of the 2012 Olympics are taking place not in one of the new stadiums but in the Royal Courts of Justice. Lawyers for two groups of Travellers are using human rights legislation to challenge plans to move them from their sites to make way for the Olympic Village. At the centre of the legal battle are two existing sites for Travellers in the east London boroughs of Newham and Hackney. The London Development Agency is seeking to move the Travellers to new sites so that construction work can begin. http://www.guardian.co.uk/olympics20...031602,00.html That's pretty standard whatever country hosts the Olympics. |
