Gangs are instructing members to carry knives rather than risk an 18-month minimum sentence for possessing an unlawful firearm, Superintendent Daniel P. Linskey said, and more young people are carrying the weapons for protection, then using them to hurt rivals during fights.

"Carrying a knife is not going to expose anyone to a minimum of 18 months or beyond," said Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley. "And they're more easily accessible, too. You can pick up a knife at an army-navy store, or mom-and-pop variety store."

I'm sure they can ban knives next, make it illegal to eat a steak with anything but a fork. Laws that ban guns like in NY and SFO are a waste.

I don't know about you, but I think it's a net gain when criminals have downsized their weaponry to blades.

At least there will be no innocent people hurt when the gangs start to do drive-by stabbings.

That depends on whether or not they're using throwing knives. And, you'd be surprised at how quickly a person goes cross-eyed and falls to his knees when hit squarely in the forehead with a chinese star. I've seen it happen many times on film. You can kill half a dozen people with a single flick of the wrist. Try doing that with a gun.

Very true for those with the skill, but I think a majority of the criminals don't have those skills, With a gun it's just point and shoot; very little skill required.
