(CNN) -- France's parliament passed a controversial Armenian genocide draft law Thursday, making it a crime to publicly deny the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks last century, a National Assembly press officer said.

The bill -- applauded by Armenians -- must now be voted on by the country's Senate. But it has been roundly deplored by Turkey.

Armenian groups and many scholars argue that starting in 1915, Turks committed genocide, when more than a million ethnic Armenians were massacred in the waning days of the Ottoman Empire.

"The issue should be researched not by politicians, but by historians," Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek said.

It's unfair to hold France to the same high standards of liberty that we have in America.

The French are simply not our equal in that respect and never will be.

The lesson here: If you value free speech don't move to France.
