Some 800 Occupy Wall Street protesters began the new year by trying to retake Zuccotti Park last night, starting a massive clash with police in which one officer was stabbed in the hand with a pair of scissors.

A suspect was arrested in the 11:30 p.m. incident, according to a law enforcement source.

Hundreds in the crowd of occupiers then surrounded the ambulance as it tried to leave with the wounded officer, the source said.

The officer, who was not identified, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

Shortly before midnight OWS protesters took to Twitter to proclaim their assault on Zuccotti — from which they were booted by cops in November.

“Barricades being torn down at liberty [Zuccotti] park,” they wrote. “Happy new years!!”

They later tweeted: “Big crowd at liberty square. We have taken back the park.”

Some 100 cops initially responded to the scene, including mounted police to maintain crowd control.

At one point, some of the protestors surrounded the circle of cops, before reinforcements were called in.

Police in riot gear started to attempt to clear the park at about 1:30 a.m. today.

FBI investigating cut gas line at Perriello's brother's home

Federal and local authorities are investigating the severing of a gas line at the home of U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello's brother in Charlottesville after his address was posted online by a tea party activist upset about Perriello's vote in favor of the federal health care bill. A threatening letter was also sent to the home yesterday.

"While it is too early to say anything definitive regarding political motivations behind this act, it's never too early for political leaders to condemn threats of violence, particularly as threats to other members of Congress and their children escalate,'' Perriello (D-Va.) said in a statement. "And so I ask every member of House and Senate leadership to state unequivocally tonight that it is never OK to harm or threaten elected officials and their families with anything more than political retribution. Here in America, we settle our political differences at the ballot box."

His office confirmed that a line to a propane tank on a gas grill was cut at Bo Perriello's Charlottesville house Tuesday during the day when no one was home. When Bo Perriello returned home, he smelled gas in the house and saw the severed line.

An activist angry over Perriello's vote Sunday published what he thought was the congressman's home address on a blog if any readers wanted to "drop by" and provide a "personal touch" to their views. But the address was his brother's home, where four children under the age of 8 live.

The Albemarle County Fire Marshal's Office is assisting the FBI, which is investigating because it involves a member of Congress. A call to Bo Perriello's house was not immediately returned.

Perriello defeated Republican Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. in one of the closest House races in the nation in 2008.

Seven Republican candidates are running in a primary June 8 to replace Perriello. None of them spoke about the actions today, but one -- Laurence Verga -- denounced the release of the address Monday. - Washington Post March 24, 2010

Hey, your probably right. There is more violence at OWS protests (and more aggressive corporate police presence), but to hear you guys spew that there is never any violence by Teabaggers is pretty ignorant.

The first rule of any movement is to get the populace on your side.

These OWS squatters have done every thing they can to alienate themselves from the mainstream and this (attacking cops) is just one more stupid stunt.

What pisses me off is the utter lack of outrage or even coverage of this stuff by the mainstream media and self-proclaimed "moderates" in the entertainment industry (i.e. Jon Stewart). King Electrical Services owner John King was shot by a person who appears to be from one of the many unions who have targeted his workers, Toledo News Channel 11 WTOL reports. King is the largest non-union electrical contractor company in the area of southeastern Michigan near the Ohio border.

He has a long history of being on the receiving end of union-related violence, and this case doesn’t appear to be any different. Before shooting him, the gunman etched the word “SCAB” into the side of King’s SUV.
