The first peak oil crisis was Whale oil..

Ships were hunting whales worldwide and the price was skyrocketing..

    Its an interesting read.............

The US should be increasing reserves, not USING reserves. Until efficient alternative energy exists (which we should also do everything to attain first), the near future is about oil control in the world. Given enough time, it WILL lead to global conflict, price manipulation and total shutdowns of large sections of society. To irresponsibly waste every drop of it right now for the sole purposes of driving cheaper prices and a higher economy, is the worst strategy for oil consumption I can imagine.

I swear, the mindset of conservatives is such that if a genie showed up and offered 5 wishes right now, or 1 wish now and eternal life afterwards, before the genie finished their sentence they'd spout out 5 requests for 1000 donuts, 20 new cars, a bigger house in the suburbs, never paying taxes again and a 10 minute orgasm starting right now (from the missionary position of course). It amazes me that they can't even look ahead or consider 24 hours from now, let alone 3, 5, 10, or 20 years from now and the impact their reckless policies have on our world. Of course, I guess if you assumed the rapture was happening this coming December, maybe that makes sense.

The ignorance being displayed by the right these days is astonishing, but you gotta remember that they are faith-based. I'm not sure what faith they are based in (neither do they) but what they have is a profound distrust of all things rational.

The control of oil is huge. That can't be denied. Our economy is based on it and some treat this fact as if it is meaningless.

But if the Big Oil companies turn around and sell it to foreign buyers to maximize their profits, how exactly does that help us when we are paying higher prices at the pump?

Yeah, they do. Because they are rational.

It is a crazy world. I don't know what their contracts contain to say but in general it seems they are pushing ahead with oil. Perhaps they are confident of their in-ground supply.
We are not the product of our environment, we are the result of ourselves.

Its a mess. We are bent over the barrel. There is no easy way.

I can't fault Big Oil selling to whomever they choose for as much as they can get. As it stands world demand is changing. We are using less but the world is using more. But having more at the ready at least keeps us in supply when the world around us is being very aggressive in getting some for themselves.

If your idea of rational is contained in your post, then you might be right.

Why would that keep us in supply when Big Oil simply sells it to foreign buyers?

That is why we are paying higher prices now. There is plenty of oil, but not enough gasoline precisely for that reason.

Given this scenario, doesn't it make sense to try to reduce our country's dependency on oil?
