It truly is unique, isn't it, for a presidential candidate to be able to appeal directly to a different race or a different creed as one of them? It has hardly ever happened before. In 1928, Al Smith was destroyed at the polls by Herbert Hoover, of all people, and the big reason was that people were afraid because he was a catholic and many protestant leaders were telling their flocks that he would owe his allegiance to the vatican and not the constitution. It worked. It took 32 more years before we even elected a catholic. Both Smith before him and JFK in 1960 appealed directly to catholics for their votes. fact. Democratic candidates have been appealing to and appearing before black audiences for years and asking them for their votes. fact. The only thing different now is that, for the first time ever, the guy making the appeal is of the same ethnicity. Never happened before.
We've never had a presidential candidate ever say, "hey, White people...vote for me because I am WHITE" because they have never HAD to say that. It was assumed. WHite folks were gonna vote for the white guy cuz white guys were the only guys running.
If Obama were to say, "Hey... all you black folks, vote for me...and when I get elected, I will enact laws that favor black folks and make whitey drink out of separate fountains. How'd ya like that, my brothers? and all you WHITE folks... I don't wan't your stupid cracker votes anyway, cuz I am a RACIST and I will be the president for BLACK people so all you loyal democratic white folks, just go ahead and vote for Romney."
...if Obama said that, you might have something substantive to (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) about. As it is... all you got is this tempest in a teapot about which you can express your faux outrage and righteous indignation. God, but it gets old!
