True story: George HW Bush ceremonially signed the first draft of NAFTA.

Another: "With much consideration and emotional discussion, the House of Representatives approved NAFTA on November 17, 1993, 234-200. The agreement's supporters included 132 Republicans and 102 Democrats. NAFTA passed the Senate 61-38. Senate supporters were 34 Republicans and 27 Democrats. Clinton signed it into law on December 8, 1993; it went into effect on January 1, 1994."

    Who enacted Nafta into law?

    I rest my case!

Really? I guess you don't classify tea party nutters as the lunatic fringe. How would you classify members of congress whose overarching strategy is non-co-operation? How believe that members of the other party are unamerican and should be investigated, that the muslim brotherhood has deeply penetrated congress, that believe free birthcontrol is equivalent to Pearl Harbour and 9/11, that wants to eliminate essential government depts and services, that believe everything they don't believe in is unconstitutional, that beleive dropping a few bombs is the best way to solve international problems, that believes that supporting a bloated military/industrial complex is more important an supporting the elderly and needy, that believes Obamacare creates death panels, that think the autobailout was a bad idea, that the wall street bailout was Obama's decision, that infrastructure investment is too costly, that creating jobs isn't as important as passing abortion legislation, that thinks their job performance in this past congress was good.

Yes the lunatic fringe. You do recall boehner and obama actually agreeing on a debt deal before boehner had to renege because he couldn't get his caucus to co-operate. You do recall that the credit rating downgrade was principly issued because nutbar partiers were going around saying that defaulting would be a good thing for the country.

Once the republicans were a far more moderate group of sensible grownups, but now, they are far to the right, rejecting ideas and concepts that their predecessors either came up with or championed. If you dont see that in the last few years the republican platform has moved far far to the right of where they have been historically you are blind.

Maybe you can explain to me why the single-wide brigade of republicans object to improved healthcare, improved roads, support cuts to social programs that will directly effect them. Oh wait I know, its because they have no idea how much they depend on government programs to begin with....
Kinda like the fringe of 30% who beleive Obama is a muslim.

The grand old party ain't so grand anymore, primarily because the massive shift to the right it has gone thru with the advent of the tea party and its accompanying loonies.

Nafta was a good deal for everyone involved. It vastly lowered raw material costs for american manufacturers. didnt do much for labour costs, but there is always the good and the bad with a fair and balanced deal.

Most favoured nation status for china was also good deal for americans. Is it China's fault that America has such a voracious appetite for their goods at the expense of american companies?

I haven't quite figured out why republicans think that the private sector should run things like prisons and schools and that whole swaths of the economy should be de-regulated. They beleive market forces are self regulating, that those same market forces lower costs and improve qualitythrough competition, but when that competitiion is not american and is kicking american butt, they start screaming in righteous hypocracy. Protectionism and capitalism do not go hand in hand.

I am an old school, Goldwater type, conservative. Some folks call me a Libertarian. I have very little in common with today's "self-proclaimed" conservatives as I believe we should all just live our lives and let others live their's. "I am a registered Republican. China has been the main beneficiary of this loophole. Since 1979 China has been granted MFN status. After China suppressed its democracy movement and the Tiananmen Square protest in 1989, Congress opposed continuation of the country's MFN status, yet both President george h. w. bush and President bill clinton renewed China's MFN benefits

The fact that he was elected would point to his low opinion of voters' intelligence being correct.

I think overall, NAFTA was beneficial, but the problem with it was that it was implemented on a timetable that was too rapid for workers to adjust to, so we had a lot of manufacturing just up and move over the Mexican border. If the duties had been reduced over a slower rate, it would have given time for major industries to adapt here so the domestic workforce could have competed better.

But the most favored nation status, that's a different story. Besides the human rights issue, they still are not playing fair in the world economy, both in regards to depressing their currency and in protecting copyrights. We lost all of our leverage on that when we gave them permanent most favored nation status.

Republicans.....so humorous. So, the argument is that Clinton signed NAFTA? Republicans backed it and have if they didn't like it had ample opportunity to do something about it and didn't.

The fcat of the matter is that Republicans favor tax credits for US companies shipping US jobs overseas. They favor tax incentives for US companies keeping corporate profits overseas. They are against tax incentives to bring US jobs home.

And Mitt has made a living off of destroying US jobs!

Who would have thunk it. A presidential candidate who is a tax dodger who has accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland - and a "conservative" electorate who support his actions!

"Conservatives" of the past - real conservatives - would have crucified the guy.
"Let's be blunt and acknowledge the biggest threat to the world's biggest economy are the cranks and crazies that have taken over a part of the Republican party," Australian treasurer, Wayne Swan
