9/11 Commission Hearings
I've been watching some of the hearings between the 9/11 commission and the congress this week. Several things have stood out. Former Senator Bob Kerrey stated that the commission was amazed at how much Robert Mueller had gotten done and how far he had come with the FBI since 9/11....in such a short period of time. Also, the administration has not been sitting on its hands since 9/11....as some partisans would have us believe. The Bush administration has installed the Transportation Security Agents in the Airports. They have created the Dept of Homeland Security. They are in the process of training 1000 new CIA agents....1000 new FBI agents, created T-Tec, passed the Patriot Act, and created the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Many of the 9/11 commission's recommendations have either already been done or are in the process of being done.
And frankly, despite the fact that Pres. Bush has come out in support of the Intelligence Director, I am not convinced it's needed or that it's a good idea. Personally I think it's just another level of bureaucracy. There would now be one more person to go through....before the information gets to the president. How flexible, mobile, and timely? I just don't see the need for it.
And personally, I don't understand the push by this commission for all their reforms to be put in place. We haven't elected them to our government. They were "hired" by the Congress to study a problem and make recommendations. And that's all. Where did it say that afterwards they should take their show on the road and push the reforms? And this "hurry up" and get it done yesterday is not the way to proceed in these kinds of changes, IMHO. Some of these recommendations....like the Intelligence Director....are huge changes. And I think they are rushing and thinking too much of the politics involved. I still think it's a partisan, political commission. Just my opinion......based on watching these hearings all week on C-Span.
Has anyone else watched any of it?
