Default Ukraine and Georgia to join Nato?

Uh oh...Grond and AmusedToDeath arent going to like this....

Quote:
KIEV, Ukraine - President Bush said Tuesday he will work "as hard as I can" to help Ukraine join NATO and declared that Russia will not be able to veto former Soviet states joining the transatlantic military alliance.

"Your nation has made a bold decision and the United States strongly supports your request," Bush told Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko after talks at the Presidential Secretariat here.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23894165/
heh heh. Oh yeah, then there is this:

Quote:
Bush praised Ukraine's democratic and military reforms, and noted that Ukraine "is the only non-NATO nation supporting every NATO mission."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23894165/
Oh my. It looks like Russia has more to worry about than just Kosovo.

Quote:
Moscow's opposition
But among the biggest obstacles in Ukraine's path to NATO membership is Russia. With nine former Soviet bloc countries already members, NATO countries abut some of Russia's borders and Moscow fiercely opposes further eastward expansion of the alliance that it denounces as a Cold War relic.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23894165/
This is just the preliminary steps of course. But the short of it is, the only real road blocks are Germany and France, who are worried about pissing off Russia.

Fortunately, the fact that they have no spine works to our advantage sometimes. We'll sweet talk and browbeat them into accepting Ukraine and Georgia into the alliance.

The process of assimilation continues. Resistance is futile.

C'mon Russia. Dont be such a sourpuss. You know you want to join.

But regardless:

Quote:
"Every nation has told me Russia will not have a veto over what happens in Bucharest. I take their word for it," he said. "I wouldn't prejudge the outcome just yet, the vote will be taken in Bucharest."

Both nations have already done some if not most of the preliminary steps. They are both in the last stages before joining officially for all intents.

They both know they need to get in asap as Russia in intentionally trying to destablize both. If they get in NATO Russia can still try to do that but it will be neutered sigbificantly in its efforts to do so.

No prob. Russia will align with China. Nothing else is needed. These 2 countries working together can easily conquer the world. Russia is not really worried about NATO coming so close, because NATO can do absolutely nothing to hurt Russian sovereignty or scare Russia with the military. They just play their game. That's all. Russia is unconquerable. Get that into your heads.

...whose biggest customer is America. Do you think China is going to go out of it's way to alienate it's biggest customer? Yeah right. We have China on a leash. They need us a lot more than we need them.

Our goal is not not hurt Russia. That isnt the function of NATO.

I guess we'll never know, since we never had any intention of conquoring them. Conquest is not the function of NATO.

Nato is becoming so strong it may eventually replace the UN.

It would have to change its name, then.

They really don't operate in the same sphere. NATO is a military alliance; the UN isn't. And the UN has more credibility in most of the developing world.

But in the area around Europe, NATO may well be more effective than the UN.

Are you saying there is a shortage of cheap labor?

China's economy is dependent on us. Without US customers, their economic ascendency will come to a grinding halt.

But we have lots of places to go for cheap labor. Cheap labor is cheap for a reason.

Not to mention the whole currency and debt issues you'd have. Just imagine, econ saves the world from itself! It is indeed the financial equivalent of MAD. And as China reaches world's biggest economy status it will get even worse (or better if you lean toward irrational paranoia about "enemies" attacking you).
