This makes no sense to me.

First, an "assault weapon" is little different from another weapon of the same make...it just looks different. The idea that somone with an AK-47 is more likely to kill people with it if they happen to have a pistol grip on it is unsupportable.

Second, the ban didn't decrease crime in any measurable fashion. Thus, stating it's ending will increase the amount of violent crime is also unsupportable.

Again. If we wanted to really reduce violent crime, versus just paying lip service to the idea, we'd ban the production of cheap, low caliber, low cost handguns.

But we don't. Because liberals hate "scary looking" guns and want to give the appearance of doing something about crime while accomplishing nothing.

Exactly... as with most social programs the primary goal here is to get votes, not make an actual difference.

Default It's far easier for a person with violent tendencies

to get their hands on a cheap, easily concealable semi-automatic handgun (perfectly legal) than it is for them to purchase an expensive, difficult to conceal "assault weapon."

Default Liberty,

Sadly, I have concluded over the last 14 years of working with social programs, that you are indeed correct. They are a bribe to get votes, not a tool to get people out of poverty. Why would you want to end poverty when you can use it to keep people voting for you on the promise that you'll take care of them?

Default It's interesting how Mike keeps saying the same things,

and ignoring the facts that might rock his little paradigms...regardless of how insupportable these paradigms are by the existing facts.

It's alot like debating religion with a fundamentalist.

This is true now, but when they are legal and a group of crazy guys who hate the world go and pull some matrix crap on another school or two or three, don't come crying to me. It's easier to kill a large group of people with these types of weapons than it is with a couple of handguns. Handguns are the choice weapons of gang thugs who only kill eachother for the most part and the occasional convenience store clerk, but the ones we need to be on the lookout for are these crazed out mo-fo's. Remember Columbine?

Remember how none of the weapons used at Columbine were those covered by the "assault weapons" ban?

That is exactly my point EuP! Imagine how many more kids could have died or been injured had they had assault weapons with the capability of letting out hundreds of shots at once! Then you would be asking, "how did those kids get ahold of such weapons...there should be a ban, these weapons should not be legal!"

Default Maximus: Nice combo strawman/hyperbole.

My point has been clearly articulated a number of times. The assault weapons ban is artifice. If we wished to get serious about violent weapons-related crime, we'd ban the production of cheap, semi-automatic handguns.
