Especially Japanese civilians who were ready to sacrifice their lives protecting the Emperor and killing thousands of American soldiers. If the US invaded Japan millions civilians and soldier would die.

I read that the War Department in case the decision to go for a full scale invasion authorized more than 500,000 Purple Hearts. Since we didnt invade the Purple Hearts made then are still being given out today.
