Default New Mandate: Islam to be taught in middle and high schools in Maryland.

Who would have thought it would ever be required? I think it is ashame to force Islam teachings down American kids throats. They say it is the Political Correct thing to do which to me has gone out of control. Your thoughts?

I think all religions and philosophies should be taught equally to all children. Part of the learning projects should include writing essays that detail how they are similar.

Probably a good idea, actually.

Because when young school girls (who haven't yet been indoctrined into the muulticultural PC mode at that point in their lives) read Quran 4:11 they'll realize that the Quran is a medieval joke, and is clearly not relevant in the modern world.

And they'll "naively" (you know how brutally honest kids can be) say "they are certainly working hard to change this despicable 4:11, right teacher?"...and the teacher will be forced by PC school policy to come back with some multicultural PC garbage about tolerance (tolerance of illegal and unethical acts, I would argue - and most honest kids would agree), then all hell breaks loose.

Also, in the coming WW4, our kids need to know exactly what the enemies' play-book says.

I think it is a great idea for all students to be expose to the major religions and theology that have had a profound effect on the world (this would include Islam).

Taomon, good post. AND how they are different. And how they almost all contradict established, proven, science.

And how the number of religious people, as a percentage of total population, is decreasing, as people slowly convert to the "religion" of this strange new thing called "science", which amazingly, seems to somehow slowly but surely explain more and more of the heretofore-unknown, decade after decade. Wow.

I think it is unAmerican. Next thing we will have young American kids wanting to start a jihad on our own soil and start beheading infadels as they call us who disagree with them. A bad idea indeed.

Its funny that the Fox news article is horribly butchered to present only one view point. Talk about "fair and balanced."

Here is the full article http://www.examiner.com/a-1429570~Co...d=temp-popular

Well from what I read in the article it seems that what they will be learning is the history of islam and some of its teachings, not modern-day islam.

Islam at its inception never had Jihad attached to any form of military struggle, it was only until the 12th Century that it ever gained any connotation of a "holy war" and its only been recently that its has been accepted by several small militant groups as a holy struggle.

Reza Aslan defines it pretty well in the article.

As far as what is exactly said in the book, I can't comment since I haven't read it. However, a lot of student's textbooks gloss over aspects of history and just cover the "basics." It doesn't suprise me if they avoid all the specific violent acts of islam and instead focus on the basic teachings. I think people are just upset about this particular book because there are so many modern implications. However, it doesn't suprise most people that when they talk about Roman history in the 6th Grade, the bloody sacrifices and orgies are left out. Or when they talk about the noble "greek democracy" and the city-state of Sparta, they conveniently leave out the fact that male members of the society routinely had homosexual relationships with young boys and had thousands of slaves. But its a big game of hypocrisy and people only want their children to learn what they think their children should know.
