Default The REAL Global Warming myth: "Scientists all agree"

So many times, I've heard folks here demand that it be noted that "scientists unanimously agree" on the topic of "man made" global warming. However, now it seems that "consensus" is starting to splinter...

Myth of Consensus Explodes

Quote:
The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming.
Quote:
Monckton, who was the science advisor to Britain's Thatcher administration, says natural variability is the cause of most of the Earth's recent warming. "In the past 70 years the Sun was more active than at almost any other time in the past 11,400 years ... Mars, Jupiter, Neptune’s largest moon, and Pluto warmed at the same time as Earth."
The biggest hoax in modern history is starting to get some light shed on it.

Has Monckton taken into account that residents of Mars, Jupiters, et al may have caused their own planets to warm? Doesn't sound that way.

Co2 isn't pollution. Why don't you worry about the real stuff? Nowadays you can't get funding for legit clean-up projects unless the word "carbon-sink" comes up.

Great demonstration of frustration. I could learn a thing or two from you.

I've never heard of or read anything saying that all scientists unanimously agree that global warming is man made. Most agree that the planet is undergoing changes and that no one has any idea of what is causing it. Either way, maybe we can be a little more considerate and take some responsibility for our actions.

Carbon dioxide is pollution if we generate too much of it. So is heat. So is noise.

Basically, any time you produce a whole lot of something, it's pollution. "A whole lot" is a vague term, of course. It does take more carbon dioxide to qualify as pollution than it takes nerve gas.

Some pollution is generated intentionally, but most of the stuff that really causes problems for us could be qualified, I think, as waste materials. Literally the crap of industry. The stuff that we have no profitable use for. Tailpipe exhaust. Motor noise, too. See why cars are considered to be such big instruments of pollution? You've got air pollution and noise pollution right off the bat, and that doesn't even get into the roads that the cars need to drive on, which quickly become environmental pollution when you make too many of them.

This whole "Is Global Warming Real?" argument drives me nuts. It's just a re-framing of the argument over whether or not industry should be allowed to pollute the environment that we all share. Personally, I think it's disgusting -- especially since the same corporations that pollute the environment and make people sick also make money off the treatments of those illnesses. Pollution for profit is real and one of the basic failings (in a humanist sense) of capitalism taken too far.

If we're gonna have all this technology -- and I really like technology -- then we have to use it responsibly. Simple as that.

Air Pollutants
Modifications to that list

Greenhouse gases

And guess how many of those air pollutants are greenhouse gases. One - Methyl chloroform. And guess where methyl chloroform comes from. Basically nowhere because it was banned in 1996 as part of the Montreal Protocol. All but three states (San Marino, Andorra, and Timor Leste) have ratified it.
