You have a good point there, maybe I was a bit too hasty to judge.

Sure it is but I'm hard pressed to feel sorry for 'em. Like I said, some people only learn the hard way - and some have a learning curve worse than Custer - but most do eventually learn.

Very true and most of the cheap foods contain a ton of empty carbs, food additives (which I really believe create addictions and increased appetite), sugars etc.

In the developed world, being poor means you are MORE LIKELY to be fat and much of that is due to what they can afford.

Thats why I would love to see us provide better education on nutrition.

The "fake food" is literally killing people and certainly its making them very fat.

No meat huh? Maybe a vegetarian diet could do these two some good.

Fresh produce is some of the cheapest stuff on the shelves. You make decisions about your weight every time you put something in that cart. Healthy alternatives are abundant and the real key is exercise and if you aren't willing to do that much it makes very little difference what you eat.

Uh huh, we all choose what we buy at the supermarket, and we choose what we eat, and we choose to excercise.
Those people who choose to eat fattening food and laze around and get fat don't have a right to complain. They brought it all on themselves.

Maybe we should try sticking to the topic.

The article is not about obesity. It's about the fact that 66% of poor people from Ohio are complaining that they can't afford basic necessities such as food and gas, and without these necessities, they can't keep a job. That's pretty bad.

Are you all really going to make the argument that all these people must simply be fat and lazy?

Jesus, you all are sitting around jerking each other off over your prejudices against fat people, and in the meantime, are totally missing the point of the article.

You know, I hear this. And yet, as a girl who grew up on a farm, I am very budget conscious about cooking and food. I cook mostly from scratch, and my kids eat VERY VERY WELL. However, I waste almost nothing.

For instance, this week, we had red beans and rice with smoked turkey (very cheap meal - we ate this for 2 days) and a salad. I also roast a chicken every other week or so, that feeds us for a couple of days, and then I freeze the bones. I use the bones/leftover meat when I'm short of cash, and make "icebox soup." The bones make stock, the leftover meat goes into the soup, and I use produce that is slightly wilted or imperfect to make the soup. It's nutritious, healthy, and CHEAP.

I don't think the issue is budget, necessarily. A lot of poor people eat pre-prepared foods that are VERY unhealthy, full of fat, carbohydrates, and salt. I think the issue is one of motivation and/or willingness to cook from scratch.

I'm familiar with where these women live. There is readily available public transportation, but they may need to walk several blocks to get to a bus stop. Furthermore, it is quite possible to eat well on a frugal budget, but you have to be willing to do a lot of extra work.

My contention is that there are a lot of Americans who have no idea how to get off their butts and change their lifestyles in order to accomodate these kinds of budget shifts. They are angry about high gas prices, but aren't willing to make lifestyle changes to deal with them. They want to maintain the convenience of driving door to door, and eating the same food they've always eaten (more expensive pre-prepared fattening items).

I think the point that no one who is 100+ pounds overweight is in danger of starving to death anytime soon is well-taken. There are many ways to live on a budget. i've made meat last weeks/months at diferent points in my life, and a lot of it is how/what you buy and how you use it.

Even now, my family rarely eats a large serving of meat. We are more likely to have a high-fiber soup or stew with small portions of meat in it, along with fresh vegetables and whole grains. It is just as inexpensive to eat that way, and whole lot healthier and filling.
