One-Third of LA Public School Students Dropped Out Over Past Four Years

VAN NUYS -- One-third of Los Angeles Unified high-school students dropped out over the past four years, according to a new study of California dropout rates released today.

The statewide dropout rate was 24.2 percent, according to the study released by state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell in a press conference held at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys.

"This represents a crisis," O'Connell said.

Its not surprising considering we Fail our children on several fronts. The first is by not funding schools equally without regard to the district they are located in. The second is our assembly line approach to education. For some its too fast and lacking in personal attention. For others its horribly slow turning the school day into torture for a generation whose attention span is measured in minutes. If we want our children to succeed we have to give them the tools needed.

Our children are exposed to much more information on a daily basis than previous generations ever dreamed of. We have to change the way we view education. We have to find a way to garner this generations attention and keep it.

A large part of the problem is that for many of these children college seems like the unattainable dream. And a high school diploma by itself doesn't get you any job that you can't get without it. These children look at these things and they don't see the benefit so they turn to other avenues.

We are failing our children.

In my state, casinos were billed to be the answer fifteen years ago. Huge numbers were generated in selling the public in how much money would be funneled into the school system. Alas no marked improvement. Not too surprising though considering the schools are still segregated here.

This can be blamed on crappy parenting and a school system unwilling to place blame and create discipline with kids. Grade inflation is a reflection of a school system that wants to pass everyone and avoid both confrontations and tough decisions. That apathy represents itself in other areas of school as well. Schools execs can be blamed more then even teachers IMO.

The drop out rate is a case of applying our culture to someone else's. Check the ethnicity of the bulk of the drop outs. Their culture doesn't stress the importance of education, they never have. They drop out so they can go to work and send money home. Why try to cram them into our cultural mold.

As far as the school funding, close to 50% of California's budget is spent on education, we pay the 7th highest taxes in the nation, yet we rank 47th in educational achievement. California's education system needs to be overhauled from to to bottom, throwing money at it hasn't helped, ten years ago they ranked 30th and been going down hill ever since even though the money's been going up and up and up.

That strikes me as illogical. Why would the dropout rate be so high if the school system is making it *too easy* to graduate? I'd expect a higher dropout rate from a system with strict standards, not one with lax standards.

Those drop out are the illegal Mexican's kids and the inner city blacks who view getting and education as being white. Yes we in liberal California are forced to provide free education to any Mexican and their kids who cross the border. And not speaking English..no problem we will sacrifice the education of our kids to put the Mexican kids first. Learning is slowed down so the classes can be taught to all none English speaking kids.

Yet the rest of the kids in the state do ok.
