Incorrect assumption rolex..

"Well now I've haered it all. You guys don't even allow the f-word on tv or radio (and you invented it). "

After 10pm or 11pm, networks can broadcast anything this side of pornography... they RARELY do but they can... look it up.

So freedom of speech after 10pm huh?

They should call it "freedom speech happy hour!"

Actually we do...maybe you dont have cable or satellite. Bad words are printed in print media all the time.

And in any event, we dont jail people for saying bad words.

So what rules do apply then? As (yeah i know, quite sadly ) an XBOX Live-er, I speak to 'you people' most nights. One guy enquired about the Osbournes and how its censored over there, but we dont get it beeped over here in the UK. Slightly off-topic I'm aware, just curious.

You can get uncensored copies of anything here. I could hand out free DVDs of the Osbournes with all the bleeps removed on a street corner, and the only thing I might get busted for is piracy...no one would bust me because the DVDs contained naughty words.

There are some things you cant say in front of children, which is the purpose of those laws. But there is no restriction on what you can say...as I pointed out, several free publications here in denver (The Onion comes to mind, though it is certainly not the only example) feature nudity and filthy language all the time, and they are not banned.

People have religous beliefs, your attempts to quash those beliefs are a slippery slope. What's next? Jailing people for speaking out against other forms of immorality? Jailing someone who speaks out against thieves because he believes it's wrong because of his religous beliefs? Sounds like you're heading in that direction
No. My point is the level of extremism involved and the incitement level. Someone saying 'i dont like thieves' isn't having the same affect as someone, e.g. a local American based version of Bin Laden, having the 'Freedom of Speech' to say 'We hate all Infidels and should revolt', or one of your Aryan Brotherhood boys having the 'Freedom of Speech' to say 'I have a lovely lampshade made out of dead jews but they enjoyed being killed'. It's sick, and unnecessary in any modern society.
Freedom of speech is about having your own opinion on a contentious matter and having the right to voice it, not about furthering your vitriol and using the masses as a wind-up toy to victimize innocent people.

SS, collectively, South America, North America = America. North, South, whatever. Dear God, pedantic beyond belief
Have the Brits closed Hyde Park?? I have stood there and listened to a Communist calling for the overthrow of the "disgusting British Government." I have listened to Hate Speech against "Towel Heads"!
Hyde Park is a remarkable example of "Free Speech"! Have you done away with it? Or have you created a LIST of "suitable " topics and words that can be used????

But if it was broadcast on TV, it'd be censored? No point to prove, genuinely interested.

WHOOOOOOOOO XBox Live!!!

*coughs*

Sorry, didn't actually think there were any gamers on this board. XBL, now that's something that needs a censor. Little kids have some mouths on them, I can'be believe half the stuff I hear on XBL.

As for what is and what isn't censored on US TV, yeah it's a bit ridiculous I think. There seems to be too much government involvement. I think stations should air whatever they want, and the consumer can decide what to watch.

So who determines this? One person? A board? This sounds much like the Soviet Union. It is up to individuals to make their own decisions. Saying we need to censure those who "rile the public" can be translated to a variety of areas. That same excuse can be used to censure speech against any group under the guise that "the masses will victimize people." Whether thieves, white people, green people, etc. It's an excuse. You are saying individuals are too stupid to make their own decisions and need to be protected from their own stupidity by the government. What's uncivilized is not that the words as much as the actions of those to censure them.

Well why don't you say the n-word in public? Don't forget to send me a postcard from chino.

As I remember, there even was a period in the US that Commies were outlawed and fired from their jobs just because someone had heared them speak about Uncle Marx.

Ahhhhhh, the good old days.
