And Obama wants to blame Bush and McCain for this housing crisis? What a liar!

Somebody wake this guy up from the dream he has been brainwashed into to see that both Democrats and Republicans are equally corrupt and allowed the greed of investment firms and banks go unchecked through deregulation (something that McCain still backs). sheesh.

I agree that there is plenty of blame to go around, so somebody needs to wake up Obama and tell him as well, the OP is right about Obama wanting to try to pin the whole thing on only Bush and his policies.

I'm new to this board, and it's probably already been discussed elsewhere, but the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (the key piece of legislation that created this mess) had a lead sponsor in the Senate by the name of Phil Gramm, who was the Republican chair of the Senate Banking Committee. The same Phil Gramm who was officially (and is now unofficially) serving as McCain's chief economic adviser. This bill passed the Senate 90-8. Only one Republican voted against it. Seven Dems voted "nay." This was a bi-partisan measure that was ultimately signed by then-Pres. Clinton. I agree with the other posters in this thread that this is a bi-partisan mess. But there's something more sinister at play here. I, like many Americans, are sick of Friedmania & his theory of "shock" capitalism, whereby firms are allowed to privatize gains & socialize losses. Until we collectively stop voting for corporatists of both parties, this cycle will continue. The S&L bailout, the constant bailouts of airlines, auto manufacturers, massive tax breaks to energy companies while they're earning record profits----these things have to stop. They are stealing from us, and the bipartisan rancor created by the same media companies they own keep us from seeing behind the curtain so that we will know that the Wizard is simply a plain man pulling levers of obfuscation. I'll leave you with a great speech I heard on C-SPAN last week. Rep. Kaptur of Ohio said it very succinctly. Invest 5 minutes of your time to hear what she has to say:

Please link me to this debunking. The fact that Gramm sponsored this bill & that all but one Republican in the Senate voted for it is indisputable. But I'd be interested in reading the "spin" nonetheless.

As the video shows, Fannie became the largest element in the sub-prime mortgage mess, and we got plenty of warning along the way. Everything else evolves out of that. Please, everybody, watch it, pause it to understand it better, and don't just invoke popular "conventional wisdom" to debunk it. Some of us involved in the real-estate market all our lives saw this coming; there were warnings along the way. Ignorance is the most expensive commodity in America today. Fight ignorance by keeping an open mind, review all available sources of information, and evaluate it with reason and sound judgement, not dogma and political spin.
