Voters approve new crackdown on illegals

Arizona voters' approval of a referendum clamping down on illegal aliens is bolstering a grass-roots effort that may result in similar measures across the nation.

The Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act, placed on the ballot by activists, makes it mandatory for people registering to vote to show proof of U.S. citizenship, the San Antonio Express-News reported. It also calls for a $750 fine and up to four months in jail for government employees who don't report the use of public benefits by illegals.

Phoenix businessman Randy Pullen, a member of the Republican National Committee and chairman of the campaign to pass the measure, called it "the beginning of illegal immigration brought under control."

"It's a movement that's growing stronger. It's not going to stop illegal immigration, but it's a start," Pullen told the San Antonio paper.

Proposition 200 was met with dismay by the Mexican government, which issued a statement yesterday saying it "will lead to discrimination based on racial profiling while limiting access to basic health and educational services."

Well, good...they shouldn't have access to our basic health and educational services.

Default About Time!!!

(Re-Printed from the other similar thread which was "Moved" :P The Current Events Forum is a much better place for this discussion.)

This is one of those issues that Bush and Kerry really were horrible at in terms of denying and avoiding.

Cracking down on illegal immigration is a very popular and very important issue across the US as a whole.

Illegal Immigrants, as well as Immigrant Workers are a HUGE reason for wage stagnation and even deflation in the US in many fields of work ranging from Blue to White collar jobs.

Given, "Illegal" immigrants are willing to work in the US Labor market at wages far less than US Citizens (manual labor/construction markets especially).

The other issue are Immigrant Workers on Bush's Temporary Work Permit Program. This program has been used very effectively against white collar professional labor (especially computer engineers). The scenario goes something like this.....companies advertise jobs at well below market wages and then complain the can't hire anyone. The response to this from Bush was a program allowing foreign nationals to enter our country for the purpose of working our jobs at scab rates. Is it just me or does anyone else have a major problem of what is going on with our labor market?

Bush and the "Free Trade" supporters are absolutely intent on knocking the bottom out of US Labor and then merging it with a 3rd World Labor pool. ("Outsourcing" is the another issue tied into this strategy but we'll save that for another thread.)

The funny thing is......Kerry was silent on this issue and so are the Labor Unions

Default I'm amazed...

...at the constant lack of attention big politicians give this issue, despite the obvious fact that it's a sure thing; the vast majority of Americans are agreed on this. What else could a politician ask for in an issue?

Default What else could a politician ask for?

Votes. They're afraid of the Hispanic backlash.

Default The only reason...

...there's a possibility of such is that they won't control the (*)(*)(*)(*)ed border in the first place!

Default Overrated

I think there is undue paranoia of the Hispanic vote being a block vote like the Blacks. I just don't see any basis for this kind of irrational conculsion outside of abject fear.

I think this measure in Arizona says a lot about where the majority stands even in a state like Arizona with a significant Hispanic population.
