I mean that most modern women don't see themselves in these terms. I have, and have long had, absolute equality at work. My husband and I share household responsibilities. I feel valued and respected, and my company treats me well.

I suppose I'm just lucky to live in the constituitional republic that I was born in, as some sort of lucky twist of fate, rather than being born in Saudi Arabia.

But, the whole "women as victims" mentality doesn't appeal much to me. I don't see myself as a victim, and i don't see, for the most part, other women as victims, either.

In America and Western Europe it's certainly not much of an issue. I was thinking in terms of developing nations, particularly in the Middle East.

One of the reasons I've never really understood the left's position on dealing with Islamist extremism, frankly, is the historic mistreatment of women as a result of Islamic influence in these two areas.

I actually shudder when I see peace activists and the like protesting side by side with Islamists.

It's like seeing Jews protesting side by side with neo-nazi fascists.

Two more diametrically opposed paradigms can hardly be imagined. Why the American left is making common cause with Islamism is beyond me.

...haven't had a lot of experience outside of cozy little America. They see only discrimination against Muslims from Christians, not the horrible things that fundamentalist Muslims are doing. I still opposed the war in Iraq, but not the one in Afghanistan. I think the civil rights of gays is going to be the great liberal movement of this century, but people are forgetting that women in the Middle East could sure use some help (I read a story a while back about a women who has executed because a man raped her - disgusting).

How is providing a rallying point for fundamentalist terrorists advancing the cause of secularism? Besides, Saddam was already secular. The Taliban was not, so in that sense you're correct but by going into Iraq when Afghanistan still needed to be focused on, we did as much harm as good.[/quote]
