NBC Says Marine Shot Dead Wounded Iraqi Prisoner

LONDON (Reuters) - A television pool report by U.S. network NBC said on Monday that a U.S. Marine had shot dead an unarmed and wounded Iraqi prisoner in a mosque in Falluja.

The Iraqi was one of five wounded prisoners left in the mosque after Marines had fought their way in on Friday and Saturday. There was no immediate comment from the Pentagon (news - web sites) on the report.

U.S. forces launched an offensive one week ago on Falluja, and have gained overall control of the formerly rebel-held city, although scattered resistance remains.

The pool report by NBC correspondent Kevin Sites said the mosque had been used by insurgents to attack U.S. forces, who stormed it and an adjacent building, killing 10 militants and wounding the five.

Sites said the wounded had been left in the mosque for others to pick up and move to the rear for treatment. No reason was given why that had not happened.

A second group of Marines entered the mosque on Saturday after reports it had been reoccupied. Footage from the embedded television crew showed the five still in the mosque, although several appeared to be already close to death, Sites said.

He said one Marine noticed one of the prisoners was still breathing.

A Marine can be heard saying on the pool footage provided to Reuters Television: "He's (*)(*)(*)(*)ing faking he's dead. He faking he's (*)(*)(*)(*)ing dead."

"The Marine then raises his rifle and fires into the man's head. The pictures are too graphic for us to broadcast," Sites said. No images of the shooting were shown in the footage provided to Reuters.

The report said the Marine, who had returned to duty after being shot in the face a day earlier, had been removed from the field and was being questioned by the U.S. military.

Sites said the shot prisoner "did not appear to be armed or threatening in any way."

It's war. If he acted against any laws, he will be punished.

I heard that the insurgents often hide explosives under themselves and pretend to be dead or wounded. And I'm sure our guys get shot in the back and after they are wounded as well. War is hell.

What have these militants/insugents been doing with the people in their custody?

I wouldn't even consdider prosecuting him.

The only mistake made it was the fact it was done with a reporter present.

True. I don't think some realize what war is. If some of these people who seem "outraged" at this were to have some film of one of these insurgents shooting our guys in the back.......how "outraged" would they be????? You know they don't have any ethics or sense of fair play. This isn't a game, for heaven's sakes. Our guys are in there doing a job....which is to clean out these insurgents. They had weeks and weeks to give it up and surrender....and they chose to fight on. That's nobody's fault but their own. They stayed to kill as many of our guys as they possibly could.

It's war. And war is hell. Let's not make a mountain out of a molehill here.

Regarding that marine, the fault is with President Bush.. it was his decision to invade Iraq.

killed many of our people. I realize that I am talking about two wars ago but the last time we dealt with "insurgents" we suffered casualties from Cong pretending that they were dead, just as JP5 said. Also lets face it we do not know exactly what happened a few minutes leading up the time that the Marine wasted the bad guy. We cannot take a slice out of the time continuum and pass judgment. We need the entire picture and all we have is the "trailer". Even if our Marine erred on the side of caution isn't it better than having his fellow Marines and him eating bits of frag from a grenade.

To paraphrase JP5 " WAR AIN'T NEAT guys "

For those who say insurgents do ths so you should be able to also. I thought you wanted to be better than the insurgent "terrorists".

I do not like seeing any soldier, insurgent or terrorist shooting an unarmed hostage.

This is a war zone. Just because we don't have film of one of our guys getting shot in the back......or blown to bits.....doesn't mean it isn't happening. In fact, it was said that these insurgents were faking being dead. Our guy doing the shooting had probably witnessed that.

It's them or us, folks. Decide who you are for.
