Default Pearl Harbor Anniversary Today

My, it seems SOMEONE has been singing the same song a LONG, LONG time.

I read in the Times this morning an interview with Jeanette Rankin, who was the one member of Congress to vote against the declaration of war on December 8, 1941, to the accompaniment of a chorus of boos and hisses. Looking back, though, we can see that the Japanese had very real grievances, and that the United States had quite a significant share of responsibility in those grievances back in 1941.

-- Noam Chomsky, December 15, 1967

Well, the nips did have some "very real grievances"... mainly land, oil, iron. "United States had quite a significant share of responsibility in those grievances back in 1941." also seems accurate.

Two powerful nations fighting over limited natural resources. It's all very normal.

Default And do you believe that Pearl Harbor was an appropriate way

to deal with their grievances?

Default Wrong conflict resolution move on their part.

Oh THAT. heheh..

I'm the wrong person to ask for unbiased opinion re Japan... I was brought up to hate and never trust the nipponese (had relatives stuck on the islands when they invaded the Philipines).

Most certainly not, any more than our invading and occupying Iraq was an appropriate way to deal with our grievance with Osama Bin Laden.

Default I don't believe we occupied Iraq to deal with Bin Laden...

Perhaps you're mistaking Iraq for Afghanistan?

I believe we went into Iraq because Saddam Hussein had violated the conditions of the 1991 UN ceasefire, which was the reason we LEFT in 1991.

That was a re-engagement, not a new war.

But I know such things are confusing to leftists, who have a short memory.

Default It’s our fault for not attacking them first.

Default Oh, that's a new one...

... a re-engagement?

What happened to imminent threat, WMD's, liberating the poor Iraqi people? You right-wingers are nothing if not creative.

You're suggesting that a sneak attack on a military base was their only option?

Please tell me this is your twisted sense of humor at work again and that you're not being serious here.

...we went in because Saddam was a "grave and gathering danger" possessed of WMDs. At least that's what we were told initially.

Regardless, Pearl Harbor was one of the most cowardly exercises of any nation's militaries in the history of the world. There's no justification for it.
