I personally do not want Turkey to join. Their membership would only be a political bonus, while it would almost certainly constitute a further drain on the already misallocated EU funding. Not to mention severely destroy any chance of a federal Europe ever occuring under the basis of the EU.
Not to mention they are not European (culturally, ethnically, religiously, you name it they are not European The only people who are truly enthusiastic about Turkey's possible joining are politicians, the enthusiasm drops exponentially from that point forth. IMO, this is just another (in a long series of) pathetic stunts by the Turkish government trying to convince their way into the EU. This isn't the first, and probably won't be the last effort. |

with Turkey. EU membership would reduce barriers to trade and immigration. While the trade benefits would probably benefit everyone, I can understand the concern relaxed immigration barriers would have in terms of terrorism and cultural assimilation. If you've been to France, Netherlands or Germany, you would appreciate that concern.
This threat by Turkey, while probably idle, doesn't portend well for future EU relations. |

It's an empty threat; surely terrorists wouldn't want Muslims to join infidel Christian Europe? Surely there would be more attacks if they did join? I still believe the terrorist threat is greatly overstated - ETA poses a far greater threat in Europe than Al Qaeda.
The Turks still haven't cleaned up their human rights record; torture is still used in interrogation and secret trials and detentions still occur. I suppose it would also help if they recognise Cyprus as a country.

I believe that all peoples have a devine right to self determination from Albanian to Zealand (old or new). I support Basque independence in concept but unfortunetly the Basque Fatherland and Liberty a.k.a Euzkadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) which was founded in 1959 with the aim of creating an independent homeland in Spain's Basque region has a unknown level of commitment to Marxism. If they were clean of Marist filth I would support them more vigorously. Marxism and freedom is oxymoronic. |
