JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israel plans to have its troops out of Gaza as soon as possible after the weekend cease-fire that ended three weeks of fighting in the Palestinian territory, Israeli officials said Monday.

An Israeli Foreign Ministry official said that the pullout, which already had begun Sunday, could be finished by Tuesday evening.

The official, who declined to be named, said that the withdrawal could be complete before U.S. President-elect Barack Obama takes his oath of office in Washington at noon ET Tuesday -- 7 p.m. in Israel -- though commanders have not been given that deadline.

The Israel Defense Forces said Sunday that it had begun withdrawing some troops from Gaza, and Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said Sunday that troops would be out in a matter of days, not weeks.

The moves follow separate cease-fire declarations by Israel, which mounted a three-week offensive aimed at crippling the territory's Hamas rulers, and by Palestinian factions in Gaza that have been firing rockets into southern Israel. Read blog on who won in Gaza?

During 22 days of fighting, Palestinian officials in Gaza have reported more than 1,200 Palestinians killed, while Israel has reported 13 Israelis killed. Palestinian medical sources said 23 bodies were pulled from rubble Sunday in Gaza, adding to the Palestinian toll...

This is one of the most disappointing things Israel has done in quite a while. If I am to take their reasoning at face-value, it goes something like this: "Yeah, we fought for 3 straight weeks, killing both Hamas as well as innocent women and children that Hamas used as meat-shields, took a lot of bad press from the international community. Sure, it's been for nothing at this point, since Hamas isn't destroyed, but it's important that Obama get off on a clean slate. We'd rather gain nothing than have Obama have to make a tough decision on day 1. That would just be unfortunate."


This is butt-kissing taken to the extreme. It's as if Obama's inauguration has taken them by surprise, like some kid with his hands in the cookie jar. Except that kid has known his parent was walking down the stairs into the kitchen for...the past 3 months.

There is only one thing that gets worse rep than someone who starts a war, and that is someone who starts a war and refuses to finish it. Either they are fools or their explanation is B.S. and something else is going on. My guess is that it is the latter. Maybe Obama or someone in his party threatened Israel with something if they didn't cease and desist immediately.

Do you think Obama threatened Israel with it's destruction if they didn't cease their offensive in Gaza? Or maybe Obama once again threatened to arm the Palestinians, Egypt, Syria and maybe even Iran like we arm Israel in effort to even the situation up a little bit.

Really, the lengths you people will go to in your attempts at sarcasm really don't do much other than illustrate your own intellectual vapidity.

The Palestinians could have made yesterday or the day before that. All they have to do is stop attacking Israel. They have the initiative...the war only lasts as long as they want it to.

Israel could have ended the conflict years ago by withdrawing to the pre-1967 borders per UN Resolution 202.

Israel is not subordinate to the UN. And Israel deserves that land because they were attacked first.

You cant claim the Palestinains are victims when they are the ones initiating the attacks. Israel is acting inself defense. They are not.

You call this destruction ( 1300 Palestinians killed, 22,000 buildings destroyed in Gaza) of Palestine "self-defense"?

Gee, a few more of these offensives on the Gaza by the Israelis and they will wipe-out the Palenstianians totally. Talk about genocide!

I don't know about my intellectual vapidity, but I do know Obama hasn't the balls nor would he be allowed to cut off aid to Israel. More than likely, Obama or someone in his administration, read as Rahm Emanuel, promised overwhelming support the next time Israel decides to attack the Palestinians, or Lebanon, or Iran, or well, you know the drill.
