Default "Islam has done so much to shape America"

**edit: This is not an anti-Muslim thread. I am not a racist. I just wonder why our President would make these claims.

Quote:
And we will convey our deep appreciation for the Islamic faith, which has done so much over so many centuries to shape the world for the better – including my own country.
--President Barrack Hussein Obama to the Turkish Parliament, April 2009 transcript

Robert Spencer of FrontPageMagazine.com has some concerns with this statement by the President:

Quote:
how has the Islamic faith shaped the United States? Were there Muslims along Paul Revere’s ride, or standing next to Patrick Henry when he proclaimed, “Give me liberty or give me death”? Were there Muslims among the framers or signers of the Declaration of Independence, which states that all men – not just Muslims, as Islamic law would have it – are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Were there Muslims among those who drafted the Constitution and vigorously debated its provisions, or among those who enumerated the Bill of Rights, which guarantees – again in contradiction to the tenets of Islamic law – that there should be no established national religion, and that the freedom of speech should not be infringed?
source: Obama: Islam Has Shaped the U.S.A.

He also asks:
Quote:
Did Muslims play a role in the great struggle over slavery that defined so much of our contemporary understandings of the nature of this republic and of the rights of the individual within it? They did not. Did the Islamic faith shape the way the United States responded to the titanic challenges of the two World Wars, the Great Depression, or the Cold War?
Why would Obama make such a statement? What was his point? Obviously no one believes that Muslims played a role in America's formation, so why would our own President claim that they did?

In fact, one blogger pointed out that the only contribution that Muslims have made in shaping America is represented in these pictures:

An example of attempted historical revisionism. What a crock!

Come on!

While it is obvious that Muslims had nothing to do with the actual formation of the country, to ignore the effects that a large group of people has had on America would be silly. Just the fact that they are here living and working means they had an effect on our country. Let's not be foolish by discounting everything they have ever done because a few have done horrible things.

Definelty and without a doubt helped in reshaping a large portion of New York, Washington, a large field in PA, some Beruit Marine Barracks, and the USS Cole.

Not all are bad but the bad tends to outweight the good specially when the the innocent are so unspeakably quite

I'm not. But, for the President of the United States to say that Muslims helped shape our country is a huge stretch and an attempt at appeasement.

You hit it directly on the head. He was looking for a way to tie the two together and did so by appeasement and has been doing so the entire tour in some form ot fashion. It doesn't have to be true it only has to make them feel better and important

There are many fringe influences in America. Sure...we have the old Irish, British, Italians, and Jewish influences which are profound. But I see nothing wrong with blowing a little sunshine up the skirts of Turks. I lived in Istanbul from 2000-2002 and flattery is no better way to get the Turks on your side. They are an emotional lot and will either be complaining about you or praising you, and they are high maintenance.

Steve...thats why I would do the same thing in Obama's shoes. Those Turks are sensitive ally and he was just greasing the goose. One mistake I made in Ankara when meeting in laws was telling them the average American never thinks about Turkey and I made my wife's cousin's wife cry. I bet you said some flowery exagerations yourself when you were courting Mrs CampSteveO. I do not see the big deal at all.

Let's go even further.

While Christians in Europe were wallowing in their own filth during the Dark Ages, Muslim mathematicians, astronomers, and scientists were making advances in all three fields that shaped the world in which we live today.
