Default Texas wants to secede?

Gov. Rick Perry: "We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it,” If Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we’re a pretty independent lot to boot."

Really bad idea:
*Loss of all U.S. military bases.
*Loss of military protection from federal govt.
*Loss of disaster relief funds.
*Loss of federal money for highways.
*Loss of Social Security to those not already on SS.
*Loss of federal money for building and construction.
*No federal border protection or DEA.
*Texas would have to purchase Interstate highways.
*Loss of Federal Reserve protection.

What would the downside be, precisely?

LOL, you beat me to it!!! Anyway, he's just saying that us Texans are very proud and independent. I don't see anything wrong with that. We are, however, one of the few states that could survive on our own.

Texas' economy is the fifteenth largest in the world. I think we'll manage.

California is the sixth largest. I'm not trying to one up you...I'm just saying most of the large states would be in the top twenty largest economies. I absolutely love the idea of dissolving the federal government. California would be 15% ahead on revenue and that figures in federal jobs lost and illegal immigrants too. We'd have the same economic out put as France.

Never happen though....civil war...remember?

It's 15th thanks to being part of the U.S. and enjoying the benefits herein. If Texas pulls away it loses all of the $$, protection from the military, plus it will have to create its own financial system and reserve depository. That's a disaster.

You're right. Our secession option effectively ended with the Civil War.

Some of our prosperity is due to being a state in the union, but not all of it. Texas has a GDP of over $1 trillion. I would think a pretty good amount of that would be left even after secession.

Protection from what?? If Texas gets out now, it may avoid some of the worst effects of what is likely to be the worst downturn in history. Not in the history of the United States. In history. And it's all being funded by the ability to create paper money at the Fed.
