Kirstie Alley's 'Fat Actress' Hits Sore Spot

Over-The-Top Show Appears On The Showtime Cable Network

NEW YORK (CBS) Comedy heavyweight Kirstie Alley is capitalizing on her super-sized self -- and the sensitive subject of obesity -- in her new sitcom, "Fat Actress." ...

..."A show that seems to be set up to make fun of fat people or to describe how miserable their lives are, is not sending a good message, and it's not the right message," laments National Organization for Women president Kim Gandy.

Alley's 200-plus pound character is clearly unhappy about her weight, and not everyone finds that amusing.

"If the idea is that fat equals desperate," says Gandy, "then that's not going to be good for any of us, and certainly not for people who are overweight, healthy or not."

"Some people will be really turned off by this subject matter," points out Jess Cagle, People magazine senior editor and a frequent contributor to The Early Show...

I like Kirstie. I think Kirstie Alley has perfect comedy timing, and 25 years ago she was the most beautiful actress on TV. I admit that I haven't seen the show, but aren't fat people allowed to make fun of fat people? Black people make fun of black people, hell, they make fun of fat people for that matter. There once was a Seinfeld episode in which Jerry thought that his dentist became Jewish so he could tell Jewish jokes.

Well, what do you think people? I think when you've made the cover of the National Enquirer with the number 307 indicating your weight and when your weight is one of their top ten scandals of the year, you've earned the right to tell 'fat' jokes.



P.S. You don't have to be an Aggie to tell Aggie jokes - though you do have to be an Aggie to tell them well.

I think if the show fails it will be because not enough people have Showtime. AND, I think they may be surprised to find that fat people are the biggest fans.

There's a very simple thing to do in situations where you don't agree with what's shown on TV: turn it off or change the channel.

I'm not an aggie but I tell jokes about them



The teachers at A&M were having their weekly staff meeting when one teacher spoke up and said "Do you people realize we have a student here who has been attending classes for over nine years and he still hasn't receiced a degree???"
Why no we didn't know that . What can we do? We don't want A&Mto get a bad name. I know, one teacher said, "Let's gather all the students at Kyle field and give this guy a pop test. Something simple he can't possibly miss, and then we will hand him his diploma."

The next day everyone was gathered in the stadium. The teacher announced over the PA system, now son if you can answer this question, you will become a graduate of Texas A&M. Okay?

Okay he said.

Now take your time and answer this. How much is 3 plus 4? The student became deep in thought for a long period of time. Finally he spoke. The answer is 7!

The crowd went into an uproar and started hollering, whooping, and chanting, GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE, GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE !
