Hey, Harry Reid, do you think we have an entitlement crisis yet?

Quote:
I want to remind you of what Harry Reid said just a few years ago in response to Republican calls for Social Security and Medicare reform. Reacting to GOP warnings in 2005 about the impending insolvency of both programs, Reid sneered:

“Today’s report confirms that the so-called Social Security crisis exists in only one place — the minds of Republicans,” said Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada. “In reality, the program is on solid ground for decades to come.”

Now, the Obama administration tells us:

Social Security and Medicare are fading even faster under the weight of the recession, heading for insolvency years sooner than previously expected, the government warned Tuesday. Social Security will start paying out more in benefits than it collects in taxes in 2016, a year sooner than projected last year, and the giant trust fund will be depleted by 2037, four years sooner, trustees reported.

Medicare is in even worse shape. The trustees said the program for hospital expenses will pay out more in benefits than it collects this year, just as it did for the first time in 2008. The trustees project that the Medicare fund will be depleted by 2017, two years earlier than the date projected in last year’s report.

The trust funds — which exist in paper form in a filing cabinet in Parkersburg, W.Va. — are bonds that are backed by the government’s “full faith and credit” but not by any actual assets. That money has been spent over the years to fund other parts of government. To redeem the trust fund bonds, the government would have to borrow in public debt markets or raise taxes.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, the head of the trustees group, said the new reports were a reminder that “the longer we wait to address the long-term solvency of Medicare and Social Security, the sooner those challenges will be upon us and the harder the options will be.”

Republicans have been saying this for years.

Just a figment of imagination, eh, Sen. Reid?
Michelle Malkin

If you don't believe her, here is one article from 2005:

Some House Republicans call for paring back proposed Medicaid cuts

So..The Republicans were calling for reform of these programs in 2005, and Reid said they were just imagining things. What an incompetent FOOL!

This is evidence of the Democrats total lack of competence. Thanks to Malkin, this has been exposed. But you know as well as I do, that this will be overlooked by the left wing media.

Everyone needs to remember this come November 2010. Get these dumb ass liberals out of office!

I am constantly amazed at whom the right champions as the voice of their movement. Malkin, Limbaugh, and Prejean. Not an intellectual heavyweight amongst them. No a reasonable person amongst them.

Why don't you comment on your incompetent Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's STUPID remarks from 2005 and how STUPID he looks today after it is revealed that the entitlement programs ARE in jeopardy as the GOP had said back then?

Huh?

Huh?
Because Harry Reid does not represent me, and I do not pay may attention to what the idiot says, and I really don't fall for the whole "Michelle Malkin pointed this out and she is a god" nonsense.

Default Right and wrong

Well you are right that Harry's Reid comments were dumb. But your jump to all liberals should be voted out of office is just your partisian opinion. How about that Harry Reid should be voted out of office is at least somewhat more logical from your arguement, even though you still would be ignorant basing it on one statement.

I assume if this is your big issue, that you then voted for Al Gore because he wanted to put social security payments into a "lock box" to keep the rest of government from spending them.

People in general have known the social security system is heading for a problem for a long time, both liberals and conservatives. And what we got from the republicans was an even dumber idea, let's pull more money out of the system and try to inflate the stock market with it. And then when everyone lost their retirement in this latest crash, that would have been a brilliantly idiotic idea.

Let's face the facts, social security can not survive in it's current structure. Either even more money will have to be put in via increased taxes, which is criminal because people have put enough money in from their paychecks, the government just stole it. Or benefits need to be cut, which is criminal because peole have put enough money in from their paychecks, but the government just stole it. Or the third option is the government needs to stop stealing money from the social security system and start paying it back, by stopping spending on other stuff. For example, if the military was cut in half and the money given to social security and to balance the budget, then we would be fine.

Enough posturing, what about what Harry Reid actually said?

The silence from the left on this issue is deafening!

We need to be reminded of what these politicans say in the past. And interesting the "credible source" factor jumped in immediatly, but they forgot to blast the credibility of the Obama Administration. Oh wait...you may have got us there.

Thread of the day right here.

Bush tried to reform it, lefties wave their magic wands and say "there is no problem here move along, move along."

I wonder if the lefties will address the subject matter or divert to something else?

This coming from someone whose party leaders said the following
Quote:
“Today’s report confirms that the so-called Social Security crisis exists in only one place — the minds of Republicans,” said Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada. “In reality, the program is on solid ground for decades to come.”
Sound like what Frank said about the housing crisis. The fact is that the dems have tripped over themselves any time the R's attempt to address a financial crisis.
