Default An Anglo-Saxon takeover of the EU?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4538249.stm

Quote:
A charge often made against the proposed EU constitution by its opponents in France is that it is an "Anglo-Saxon" document - a plot to enshrine Thatcherite policies which will devastate the social balance of European economies.
They are like Jews.. They control everything.. Those Anglo-Saxon bastards..

The paranoia in the air is a sure sign of the spring..

Default .

Balls to Europe and our place within the constitution.

I think Europe should become part of the UK. Especially France, then we can disband it and re-name it Greater England.

Default So what is really going to happen

If France votes "No"? Does the EU just wither and die after that or does France just look bad in the eyes of other EU nations?

Are there any other EU news sources other than the BBC? I try to stay on top of things but would like to read something that offers a different view than the BBC.

I don't believe it would be the end of things. It would be bad still. EU needs the constitution. Especially after the expansion it is critical to move to majority vote. I don't believe that the EU is currently a healthy construction. It has to move on.

As an EU citizen, I would like to see more power transferred to the parlament, where we have directly voted our representatives.

EUObserver (www.euobserver.com) is a good source.

I read it from time to time, but post it's articles more rarely.. The forum is still mostly about Americans, and they might not be so interested about EU's internal events.

Default Its not just France...

The Dutch, and many other nations are questioning the wisdom of adopting this particular constitution - from The Guardian:

"Another man said: "I'm definitely voting no. I'm Dutch, I like being Dutch, and I want to stay Dutch. We don't need this. They want to take away our parliament and turn us into a small province in a super-state, like America. No thanks."

The grumblers are ubiquitous. "The chances are high that we will say no," said Maurice De Hond, head of the Peil polling agency. "The elites here have never involved the public on anything to do with the EU. Now all the negative elements are piling up. The gap is widening in favour of the no camp."

The Netherlands will deliver a verdict three days after France's fateful vote on the European constitution on May 29. Although both races will be close, a double whammy no from France and Holland will be a knockout blow, triggering a new EU crisis and sending the union's planners back to the drawing board."

And then all the other nations where referenda are required before ratification of international treaties (I know, I can hear them now, all those 'non-democracies') - they too wil put the proposed constitution to the test. I cant see it being adopted without it first being amended.
