Forget this "replace O'Connor with another centrist." Rather, argue the last Supreme Court appointee was Ruth "Lonny Left" Bader Ginsberg. Appoint a person who would balance her out. If the last appointee was a looney leftist, what’s wrong with appointing a person on the opposite side of the spectrum? I admit it would take the appointment of Jerry Fallwell to balance Ginsberg, but I'll compromise and settle for Janice Rogers Brown.

looks like it's going to be Cornyn, he was a complete tool as a senator, and calling him a tool as a person might apply, but he was a moderate right appellate judge here in Texas... I could live with him I think

O'Connor was not only the swing vote on abortion decisions (decisions stricking state laws infringing (or unreasonably interfering) on the "right" to abortions), but she was the author of the current standard (i.e. Planned Parenthood v. Casey).

If Bush, as is likely, appoints a pro-choice nominee, the landscape of American law is going to change fast and dramatically.

Janice Rogers Brown is too much of a conservative activist to get onto the Supreme Court. I support anyone in the Scalia model, but I will go to washington and help filibuster if Rogers Brown is nominated. She needs to stay in the south where the harm she does is restricted to those who supported her nomination.
