I'm a junkie when it comes to watching the History Channel and Military Channel, especially when they do shows on World War II. The 60 year ending of the War, with the dropping of two A-bombs by the United Sates, is approaching soon, this August.

I recently came upon some mind numbing stats on the total deaths during World War II. In totals, the AXIS countries suffered 8,268,000 deaths. ALLIED powers suffered an incredible 39,963,700 deaths. On the ALLIED side, I wasn't surprised reading the Soviet Union suffered 20,000,000 deaths. What surprised me is China suffered 10,000,000 deaths. I had no idea China had this many casualties. 2,500,000 Chinese casualties were military, and 7,500,000 were civilian casualties. Soviet casualties were evenly divided--10, 000,000 military and 10,000,000 civilian casualties. Germany had 4,200,000 dead, and Japan, 2,350,000. The United States had "only" 400,000 deaths--all military. The UK suffered 388,000 deaths—62,000 deaths to civilians.

These numbers absolutely leave me speechless. Nearly 50,000,000 deaths in one war, from 1939 to 1945. These numbers also help put in perspective the Soviet's taking of Eastern Europe, along with East Germany after the war. And no doubt the Chinese loss of 10,000,000 persons fighting against the Japanese in Southeast Asia explains in some measure their desire to control much of Southeast Asia.

There should be no doubt Truman made the correct decision dropping the A-bomb and ending the war. There is no telling how many (both AXIS and ALLIED) lives were saved by his decision. Already, the ALLIEDS had 650,000 troops organized for an invasion of Japan. Thankfully, the invasion never took place.

Nearly 50,000,000 deaths from one war. I simply am unable to grasp it.

For the ALLIED powers, there were 14,276,800 total military deaths. Civilian deaths were an incredible 25,686,900. Nearly 26,000,000 ALLIED civilian deaths. Amazing.

Much is made out of the number of civilian deaths suffered by Japan, resulting from B-29 raids, the fire-bombing of Japanese cities, and of course, the dropping of 2 A-bombs. Japanses civilian deaths in the war were 350,000. This is the same number of civilian deaths sufferd by France. Germany suffered twice as many civilian deaths, at 700,000.

Civilian deaths:

Soviet Union: 10,000,000
China: 7,500,000
Poland: 5,750,000
Yugoslavia: 1,400,000

me too. isnt it amazing how they keep showing stories about nazis abuse of jews yet do not mention when jews announced war on germany or when abuses of jews began. also isn't it interesting how there are no actual documents of proof to gass chambers being used only memories of survivors who claim so, and no tapes of hitler talking against blacks or hispanics or arab islamists or against any race for that matter, yet jews portray him as a terrible racist?

barney-fife, though I often wish the history channel would give a little bit more time to the russian front i do too love watching the channel's wwii programs. In my book, it ranks as the number 3 most fascinating war after the 2nd punic war and thirty years war.

Photographs of piled dead bodies. Memories from our fighting men who actually met the survivors. Photographs of the concentration camps in use. Some of the actual camps still exist for the survivors to go to for remembrance. Videos and audio recordings and newspaper recordings of Hitler preaching against Communists and Jews and homosexuals. MASSIVE amounts of entirely seperate testimonies. What are you, a Nazi? How can you deny the obvious facts presented right in front of your eyes?

Visit the Holocaust museum in D.C. I have. Go there and THEN repeat your statement, you fool. I agree with Barney on this one. You are insulting the memories of the millions of tragic deaths from that horrible event in history, and I would like you to take your filthy extremist ideas somewhere else, preferably Israel, where you would be lynched and that would be that.

who's bodies and from what causes they died? there was diseases, starvation from all the bombings.
