Speaking of pantywaists, there would be the NCAA officials. FSU is suing, and as someone who is part Seminole, I say more power to them. I'm perfectly ok with the use of ethnic names for a team as long as my team wins.

Someone in my office asked today what Florida State's mascot will be if this ruling succeeds. We think it may be the Florida State "original inhabitants of Florida until you white (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s took our land."

Yeah, that one's kind of silly. As 12th said, is the Texans offensive? How about the Vikings? Or my high school mascot, the Spartans?

I think offensive terms and stereotypes might be properly limited (The Squaws, for instance). But where's the logic in simply erasing ALL references to American Indian culture?

But then I live in Minnesota, where the University decided in the late '80s to declaw Goldy Gopher because he looked mean.

We already have to deal with having a gopher as a mascot. You've got to take away his claws, muscles and grimace and make him look friendly, too?

Methinks people forget what mascots are for.

all the most obvious ones are already taken: gators, hurricanes, dolphins, buccaneers, etc.


If we were farther south, maybe it would be the FSU retirees and someone with dark leathery skin could drive a little car all crazy around the field, but then the AARP would be all up in arms.

Didn't the Seminole tribe already said it was cool with them to use the name? Heck, if I was Chief Billy I'd copyright the name and charge FSU for it's use

The University of Massecusetts changed their mascot from the Red-men to the Minutemen ( form the Revolutionary War period). Well wouldn't you it some female liberal diberal group protested the Mascot The Minuteman because the Mascot carries a Flint Lock Musket. They decided that the Musket portrays a "hostile and aggressive image." Would any of these liberal diberal broads stop and think that if i wasn't for the original Minutemen carrying their Muskets into battle she probably would not be able to complain and spout her liberal diberal nonsense to the rest of us.

Maybe the University of Massachusetts should have called their mascot THE MASSACRES after the Grennfield MASSACHUSETTS Massacre by Indians.
