Let me broadcast my ingnorance of internal Russian politics by asking a question that's always nagged at me:
Isn't one of Russia's problems that it's so darn big?
The eastern provinces have always appeared only loosely controlled by the central government, because they're so far away and so thinly populated. With the hollowing out of the Russian military and police forces, I can only believe that that control has weakened in the last decade.
If there is a challenge to Moscow, will it be something as simple as Siberia breaking off into its own nation?
