Sure, rich and poor have the same "vote", but money is the driving force in politics.
How? Can money force me to vote for someone I dont want to vote for?

Quote:
That's why the rich have an inordinate amount of pull on the political machinery.
They have only as much pull as we give them. The Rich did not put Bush back into office. People like me did. If the Rich had supported David Duke he still would not have been elected.

Quote:
You ARE being facetious, aren't you?
No, I am not. Everyone gets only one vote. There are way more poor than there are rich. Therefore, the Poor are the majority. The majority has the power.

If they choose not to make use of that power, they have only themselves to blame. But the option is there for them, and has been for a long time.

Quote:
Okay, as for your first comment, none of my posts made any references to political power, so I'm not sure why you mention that here.
What are you talking about if not political power? Political power determines who gets to make the rules. No amount of money can override it. See MerlinX's Microsoft example above.

Quote:
The poor have more power because there are more poor people?
More political power, yes. Bill gates still only gets one vote, even though he is the richest man in human history.

Quote:
I suppose you would also agree that sheep control New Zealand since there are far more of them in the country than people.
Your analogy is wrong, because Sheep have no say in their fate. Poor people do. Sheep cannot vote out the shepard.

Quote:
As for the class system in the US, yes it is very fluid, which is good, but the prejudices still exist. Who cares about personal prejudices? Uhh, poor people probably do.
Why? They have laws preventing the rich from exploiting them...laws they themselves put into place.

Quote:
The poor are treated terribly in this country by their fellow countrymen. Try walking into a supermarket with food stamps and you'll begin to understand the problem.
You mean because people dont like being around them? So what?

It may work that way on American Idol, but that's not how government here works.

For the record, I put more trust in something supported by the Cato Institute than any of those other sources...

But more importantly... answer me this...

How does the census define poverty?

Answer: in regards to payroll.

So in other words, a billionaire who is not drawing a paycheck is classified as living in poverty.

Poverty is relative to where one lives. The question is not how much money you have or how much money you make. It's how often to you go to bed hungry? Do you have to choose between paying your water bill and eating? Or gas for your car (assuming you have one)? Or paying your rent?

i'm all for combating poverty, but this capitalism, since we had reccesion there are bound to be more poor, this is a normal cycle of capitalism, what must come up must go down. Now if this poverty increases in the future then it would be a good to revise our welfare policies.

Default 12th man, you are so right!

True poverty is like you said. It is less likely in our country than any other , but it still happens. It is up to those like us who are blessed to look after those are in need, and lift them up on their feet.

Although I went to Baylor, I still like Aggies.

Thanks, bktx1. I don't know a lot of Bears though my niece is one. I used to think she was a snob, but she married an Aggie last July so I had to revise my opinion somewhat. I very much wanted my son to go to Baylor (he wanted to minor in theology). You can't have a greater compliment than that.
