The Mayor of Dallas has started an initiative to raise $3 million to get apartment homes for the victims of Katrina sent to Dallas. She notes that FEMA is months away from providing a solution for these people, so the city wants to act now to help these people. She notes that the very poor, on welfare and unemployed, have already found places to live through HUD, but the working poor, who were renters, have no such assistance and are living on the floor of the local area and convention center. The working poor are who this initiative wants to help.
Sure, we want to help everyone, but isn't is somewhat dysfunctional to put those on the dole first in line, when those who are working and struggling have to take a back seat? This seems to be very common in our society, not just in dealing with this disaster. |

Yes, it is stupid to help the most lesser among us. ONLY if they refuse to help themselves.
However, the "working poor" truly are the ones among us(with the notable exception of the handicapped) who deserve a "hand up". They are trying to help themselves. And these people seem to be who this is aimed at(hopefully I am reading correctly). If it helps those who are trying to the best of their ability and circumstance... to help themselves... them give 'em TWICE what you think they deserve. Because they deserve it.

In a way....this is how it should work. Individuals and smaller groups can act faster than bloated, big government organizations. And without all the redtape. It's always been that way.
Corporations have already donated 1/3 of what's coming in to the victims. I know many people here in the Dallas area whose companies are putting victims up in hotels, providing their food, clothing, and expenses. They are NOT waiting for the gov't to do it. Same with churches. Most churches have adopted several families....providing all their food, housing, clothing and expenses. This is how it SHOULD work. And it works so much better. Might be best to just do away with some of this gov't stuff....and stop taking all our taxdollars....and just let the people, organizations, and companies step in and do it. This is the very kind of thing Pres. Bush was talking about with his "faith-based" initiatives and how they are much better equipped to deliver help in times of crisis....because they are there, on the spot, and local. And just look how much FASTER it is. It's proving to be the best way to go, IMO.
