New Iraqi government prepares to take stage

BAGHDAD — Iraqi leaders will announce the makeup of the country's new government this weekend, then turn to the task of running a country increasingly divided along ethnic and religious lines.
After months of wrangling, those leaders say they have come up with a system that will help develop consensus on critical issues.

Default mmhh

Last week I was reading that the formation of a government was continuing to be delayed because no agreement could be reached on who would hold the influencial positions of Interior Minister and Defence Minister.

Today we hear they`ve formed a government but still haven`t agreed on these posts.

It sounds a bit like wallpapering over the cracks.

Still, I suppose that any government is better than none and a little wallpapering over the cracks is to be expected with such a nascent government.

Let us hope that the quoted expert is being overly pessimistic in his assesment.

Default Here's CNN's take on it

It seems more recent, and there was a partial walk out. Still, they got the cabinet sworn in. Shakey, but off the ground now.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/...ain/index.html

Quote:
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's first permanent government since the fall of Saddam Hussein was approved by parliament and sworn in on Saturday, despite the failure to fill three ministry posts because of political disputes.

"The main problem now is security, and they could not appoint defense and interior [ministers]," said prominent Sunni Muslim politician Saleh al-Mutlag, who walked out of the proceedings.
Broadcast (NBC) news says they're going to be dictating to U.S. forces when they want us to leave, but only on their terms.

This CNN story also has the reaction from the UK.

Default Nothing has ever been enhanced...

...by a statement from Margret Beckett. And true to form here she trots out some dumbed down banalities (My god! I never thought I`d miss Jack Straw)

Default Gloomsville...

... in the Iraqi press.

If their sentiments are echoing the Iraqi people then there`s not much confidence in this new government.

Default We have

to pray and hope they succeed. At this point, their success in a coalition is OUR LAST HOPE.

We should all wish them well..

Default I would like to point out...

At each step along the way, people have criticized and complained about the process of Iraq becoming a democracy. It has been neither pretty, or perfection by a long shot.

It still happened, nevertheless.

There's more to go too. They're not out of the woods yet. But they're beginning to take off on their own.

Like Munko, I wish them well.

Default Not There Yet

Today the US ambassador to Iraq said it could take many years for an effective government ready to govern. Iraq is still without the Secretary of the Interior, Defence Minister, and another major post.

The previous links that reported the story that I posted in this thread already say that. You obviously didn't read them.

Way to poo poo though dude. You'll make a nice little liberal one day.
