Default U.S. talks directly with Iran

Generally it takes months or years for the Bush Administration to heed good advice, if at all. Regardless of what one thinks of exactly how effective such talks will be, talking with them directly is better than not doing so and labelling them "evil".

Quote:
BAGHDAD - U.S. and Iranian envoys spoke directly to each other about how to end Iraq's violence, meeting at an international conference in Baghdad and opening limited but potentially significant contacts that could ease their nearly 28-year diplomatic freeze.

...but a positive result would depend on whether the talks are given sufficient commitment.

With Gee Dubya at the helm I would be surprised, nay, amazed.

Considering the United States broke off ties with Iran after militants occupied the American Embassy in Tehran in the wake of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, I'm wondering how you blame the non-talking on George W. Bush's administration?

Except that since then, there is clearly no more important a time to talk with Iran than the last few years.

Gee Dubya has repeatedly rebuffed any suggestions of direct talks with Iran. He snubbed Iranian overtures following the invasion of Iraq and most recently rejected the Iraq Study Groups recommendations of negotiations with Iran and Syria.

Default Hey Folks

One of the first rules of war: Know your enemy. Nothing good or significant will come from this. The only way to make your enemy do what you want is a heavy weapon between their back-ribs. At best, they'll lie. At worst, they'll use the talks for political or military gain. Example: North Korea oil Deal with that *Racial epithet removedClinton.

This is absurd - arab psychology is to look at any such effort as weakness, and they are right. What will the talks consist of?

U.S.: Uh, (whimper) PLEASE Iran (whinnnne) - don't supply IED parts to the Iraqi IFs - let us (whimper) win, spread democracy to your theocracy, and lose your chance for a Greater Iran - OK? Puweeese? With sugar on top?

Default Well Jake...

Maybe they're not looking at it exclusively through the eyes of how the Arab psyche would view us. The talks would consist of something that, at the very least, the liberal elements of our society can't say we didn't try.

At least one would hope their memory could improve just a tad.

You never know... wilder things have happened.
