Five years on, Bush vows victory in Iraq by Laurent Lozano Thu Mar 20, 2:34 AM ET WASHINGTON AFP - US President George W. Bush on Wednesday defended the launch of the war against Iraq five years ago, vowing no retreat as he promised US forces would triumph over Iraqi insurgents. "Five years into this battle, there's an understandable debate over whether the war was worth fighting, whether the fight is worth winning, and whether we can win it. The answers are clear to me," Bush said at the Pentagon. "Removing Saddam Hussein from power was the right decision, and this is a fight America can and must win," he maintained, referring to the late Iraqi dictator. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080320...raqwar5yearsus -------------------------------------- Dear Mr. President, Hey McFly, your job was to kill the guy that killed 3000 Americans back in 09/11/2001... not dick around nationbuiling Iraq for the next 94 years. Five years in Iraq: a deep disquiet in the US ![]() By Peter Grier Thu Mar 20, 4:00 AM ET Washington - The Iraq war has been perhaps America's bitterest lesson since Vietnam in the realities of war and geopolitics – profoundly altering ordinary citizens' sense of their country, its essential abilities, and the overall role it plays in the world. Poll after poll shows that Americans are worried about US troops. They're distressed at the war's rising human and financial cost and are fully aware of the globe's rising tide of anti-Americanism. Most of all, they may be confused – unsure of how the United States got here, uncertain about what to do next, and in doubt about how, and when, the conflict will end. "It's just become a mess, and I don't think there's an easy end to it, so we're going to end up in a quagmire," says Ben Lem, a Boston-area cafe owner. The bottom line may be that today many in the US view the Iraq invasion as a mistake they don't want to see repeated. Troubles in Iraq appear to have fed a desire on the part of some ordinary Americans for disengagement with the world. "We are in a period of rising isolationism, just as we saw a bump in isolationism after the war in Vietnam in the '70s," said Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, at a Center for Strategic and International Studies seminar in Washington on March 12. http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20080320/ts_csm/airaqthree ------------------------------------------ Well thats one legacy of Drunky McDumbass and the Republican Party.. turn USA on to isolationism. Iraqis say war failed to win battle for democracy by Ammar Karim Thu Mar 20, 4:40 PM ET BAGHDAD (AFP) - The United States has crushed the tyrannical rule of Saddam Hussein but failed to win the battle for democracy in Iraq, many Iraqis said as they marked the fifth anniversary of the US-led invasion. US President George W. "Bush speaks of victory but I say he has only achieved one thing for this country, destruction," said Abu Fares al-Daraji, in his tobacco shop on the once-bustling Saadun Street of downtown Baghdad. For Daraji and many of his compatriots, sectarian bloodletting in Iraq has overshadowed the elimination of Saddam's iron-fist regime. And many feel that Washington alone reaped benefits from the war. "The United States achieved victory for itself by strengthening its control of the region, particularly that Iraq is a strategic country to contain the Iranian threat," said Daraji. "They only secured their own interests, not those of the Iraqi people," Daraji said. "The Americans are an extension of Saddam. Decision-making is in their hands and the (Iraqi) government has no sovereignty whatsover. "There is no victory. The Americans brought our way things we never knew like terrorism and the killings we see on the streets," Daraji added. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080320...ar5yearspeople ---------------------------------------- USA <--- dammed if you do, dammed if you don't. *no, not dammed by God, dammed by the Iraqis.
