Default Security in Iraq is Improving: NIE Report

Report: Security in Iraq is improving
By PAMELA HESS, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - A new classified intelligence assessment on Iraq says there has been significant progress in security since the last assessment was delivered in August, a senior military official said.

In most ways the new National Intelligence Estimate hews closely to the one delivered nine months ago. That document spoke of security gains since the increase in troop levels began in January 2007, the continued high rate of violence and uneven progress on the part of Iraqi security forces.

In a departure from the January and August 2007 intelligence estimates, the intelligence agencies have declined to release an unclassified summary of its key points. National Intelligence Director Michael McConnell decided last fall that NIEs should not as a rule include an unclassified section because he believes analysts are less likely to be forthright in their writing if they believe the language will become public.
Just take their word for it...

Remember, thats the same Intelligence community Obama must count on because of his inexperience in foreign affairs.

Unless he has plans to put some sort of "barrier" within that community

Obama has access to the classified NIE.

We as citizens have nothing but the word of anonymous senior military officials to base our judgment on.

I'd imagine that's enough for some...

But, considering the last few intelligence reports have been contrary to the administration's rhetoric about the war, I am unsurprised by this move.

Its not just "anonymous senior military officials". They don't make up the entirety of the intelligence community.

Perhaps you think they do. Does Obama think this also?

There is no unclassified summation. As I said, that's likely because the inteligence community hasn't been precisely "on message" from the administration's standpoint.

I'm aware.

I simply employ what is called "critical thinking." There's no document here, only words from anonymous sources.

Which is more than a little fishy considering the scathing nature of the last few estimates.

Does McCain understand the difference between shiites and Sunnis?
