It matters a lot, and tobacco is not similar to pot in any way other than it is smoked and causes cancer and similar health problems.

Well again I would expect something like Ecstacy to step up. Definitly not heroin. Certainly pushers would have some impact. I think it's mostly a question of how much.

I suppose in part that might be related to why people have to risk going to jail to do a drug instead of just getting buzzed on alcohol for less money and with less risk. Things like "because it's cool" or because a dealer got them into it could shift.

Sounds like someone was smoking a little while they were writing the above sentence.

To provide a counterargument to the assertion that legalizing pot would move people on to other drugs, I have often said that the reason pot is a "gateway" drug for some people is because it is illegal. People who hear pot lumped in with real drugs as "dangerous" will, upon finding out they have been lied to and needlessly restricted, wonder what else the government doesn't want them to have, "just to be dicks about it". Pot's illegality inspires experimentation, b/c people don't know what to believe anymore unless they try it for themselves. From Reefer Madness to "weed funds terrorists", with such a dishonest policy, what can you expect?
