Justa, You hit squarely on the head. The purpose of this money distribution was not intended to be a tax rebate for the specific purpose of a tax rebate. It’s purpose indeed was to be an economic stimulus event. I also sort of fell into the trap of calling this a rebate. Shrub does want to call this a tax rebate so that he can say that Republicans “lower taxes”. Having said that I still do not believe that the small amount of stimuli targeted at the individual will amount to anything except to send money to China.

Default "rebate" funded by deficit spending ?

I understand that the way this “economic stimulocity “ will be funded by deficit spending. There is no way that we can deficit spend our way into economic vigor.

What this administration is doing is actually taxing our grandchildren in order to claim that the gave us and our children a “tax rebate”.

Funny! I disagree. IMHO, the purpose is a bribe. It's an election year so everybody will jump on board. They will target those people most likely to be bought for $300-800.

They get it every year; not just as a one-time stimulus to the economy.

Dems always want to shift to discussions of payroll and state taxes during a discussion of FEDERAL income taxes. I have no problem with EACH of those being lowered. My state doesn't even have state income taxes. But that's not what the discussion is here. It's about FEDERAL INCOME TAXES and a proposed tax rebate based on those who PAY those taxes.
Once the discussion morphs into a generic argument about who pays taxes, such as:

Quote:
Just like before, the Dem leadership wants to give the tax rebates to the unemployed and those who don't pay taxes to start with.
then the discussion has already been shifted. In addition, federal income taxes are not mutually exclusive to other taxes. For instance, payroll tax surpluses are borrowed from the general fund and used to justify income tax cuts. It might make some sense to give a rebate on payroll taxes. Also, many state taxes are deductible at the federal level, affecting income tax collections.

Comparing what you had in 1950‘s-60’s is hardly a realistic scale of rich and poor as it relates to today. Most people didn’t have air conditioning then, it didn’t make them poor? If you were ever poor, it certainly doesn’t show.

Who said a word about "focusing ONLY on the wealthy???" Neither Reb or myself has said that. All I've said is....don't leave the wealthy out....which is what Dems propose.

Actually stimulating the economy does more for the rich, since they own the largest majority of the stocks and the businesses that “will” be effected. Yours and rebellions portfolios will be adequately enhanced , if the stimulus works as designed.

There will also be an opportunity to boost the appearance of some declining/leveling off stocks so that you can dump them at a higher rate before they potencially decline to a point that you end up losing investment dollars on them.

I still think it is a band-aid, to buy votes with limited results overall.

Of course that is just me?

Nowhere did I shift to payroll taxes or state taxes. YOU did. That's what this TAX rebate is about. If you want it to be a tax rebate to all who pay payroll taxes....then you should write or call your Congressman and ask him/her to make that proposal.

WHAT??? "Stimulating the economy does more for the rich???" Are you kidding? Sorry, but when the economy is suffering, it hits the middle class and poor much harder. I'm telling ya: Dems are one selfish group of people. They are SO intent on trying to make the "rich" suffer, that they are willing to toss the poor and middle class overboard. It's called, 'cutting off your nose to spite your face.' It's like when in 1969, the Dems came up with the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) idea to try and "soak the rich." They were so stupid, they didn't even index it to inflation, and now their "soak the rich" ploy is soaking many in the middle class. And since they now rely on spending that money in D.C.----they refuse to fix it with anything but one-year bandaids.

Pathetic.

It doesn't show because I don't go around whining about it. It doesn't show because my husband and I did all the right things.....put ourselves through college; didn't spend beyond our means; set goals along the way and reached them. I AM the American Dream and I AM fully aware of what wonderful opportunities our countries affords ANY who are willing to play by the rules and make the most of them!!

BTW, just because one fits into the class designated as "poor" today ALSO doesn't make someone truly poor. I'll give you an example. Before they died, my parents would have fit into the "poor" category as far as income and savings. They lived only on social security. And yet, they owned a nice home, were able to pay their bills, eat well, and own a car. Oh, and a big tv too. So, even though they fit into that category; they were not poor. That's the case for many today who also fit into that category. And if they pay federal income taxes, they need to get a tax rebate. They need some of their OWN money given back to them.

Yeah, see, that's a good point JP.

You couldn't do that today.

First of all, you couldn't do it, but secondly, they wouldn't let you!

A tax rebate isn't going to help those people, JP. It might help 'em for a day, but it isn't gonna help 'em.

And besides, those kinds of people, they'd just save the rebate money and use it to pay bills and stuff. They wouldn't "spend it" like they're supposed to.

Nah, I still say, this tax rebate thing, isn't going to work.

It isn't going to produce the desired results.
