Icon13 Buy American? Does Detroit deserve conservatives’ patronage?

Recently, the major car manufacturers announced they would be consolidating their dealerships and eliminate others as part of their cost cutting measures. In 1984, American car makers held about a 77% share of the American auto sales which has slipped to an all time low of 51% share today. This cost cutting measure would of course mean fewer jobs and perhaps, an end to many family owned dealerships throughout the country.

I’ve always considered it to be a patriotic duty to buy American and have always done so when buying new cars. It has always made me cringe when I see all the liberal elitists driving foreign car makes. How do I know they are liberals? They are the ones driving the Volvos, BMW’s, Mercedes, Acura’s and Subaru’s with a NPR bumper sticker or a “Save the Whales,” or “Visualize World Peace,” or “Save Mumia Abu Jamal,” bumper stickers or some other idiotic liberal cause celeb.

But from the top to the bottom, it seems the auto industry is always supporting democrats and democratic causes. The unions always endorse the democrats, the workers are always enlisted to support and campaign for the democrats because they are told that the democrats are for the working man, the republicans are for the rich. The Ford Foundation is one of the most liberal organizations in the country.

What do they get in return from the democrats? We get demands for smaller sized, higher gas mileage cars, lower emission standards, more and more auto safety regulations, manufacturing regulations, workplace safety regulations, trade agreements which undermine their businesses and outsource their suppliers. This in turn causes jobs to be lost to overseas competition. All the while the unions keep dishing out the dollars to more liberal politicians.

Frankly, I can’t see why the two are in bed together all the time except to say maybe they enjoy taking it from behind.

And what do we get as conservatives? We get more and more liberal politicians who complain about the number of SUV’s on the road; more and more anti-American rhetoric from throngs of liberal democrats who support our troops (ha!) but not the war.

The only problem I have is I don’t like the French and I don’t like the Germans so I don’t want to support those idiots either. I’ve been considering doing some research to find out what cars are made in Mexico. Not because I like Mexico mind you, but if we can increase jobs down there maybe some of these illegal aliens will go back home and make me a car.

A few years ago I bought a Dodge Intrepid and was told by the salesman that it was made in Canada. The Honda I own now was made in Ohio.

I don't know if it is even possible to 'buy American' considering how many of the car's components are manufactured overseas.

How does one going about finding out where a car is made? I mean, I wouldn't trust the salesman. How do we know what percentage of components were made in the USA, plus engine, transmission, where they were made?

This information is not hard to find. I know Toyota is very transparent when it comes to this information. My Corolla was manufactured in New Jersey, and approximately 30% of the components were made in Japan, and the other 70% from Mexico and here. I have a hard time feeling sorry for American manufacturers because they somehow feel they are entitled to ridiculously high wages given their job, as well as benefits that most in America could only dream of.

The Auto Worker's Union is probably one of the biggest reasons for the downfall of American cars. In the face of competition, the wages for American auto workers did not fall fast enough to market levels. The SUV craze was also one of the dumbest moves in history. If you go as far back as the idea of Just In Time manufacturing, American companies rejected the idea by the man who invented it. This same person went to Japan and one of the corporations that ended up adopting it was Toyota. You can't (*)(*)(*)(*) all over good ideas, your own neighbors, and then expect to sell cars just because you live in the same country.

I know, I want one of them hydrogen cars. I've been saying that for years. I seen an experimental one years and years ago. Is there one coming to the market soon? That oughta cut the flying carpets out from under the Arabs.

From the old bureaucratic structures http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2005/0425/078.html and from raw ingenuity what the free market and capitalism are all about, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7265267.stm
