Default Cash for clunkers Obamas most successful program so far

I had my doubts about this but it's being used so much the govt may have to suspend it. Dealers talking of backlogs in the system for customers wanting to trade in.

The Truth: Americans want to drive fuel efficient cars. Its good for the environment and you get way better gas mileage out of your car.

No republican or person on the right will admit it because it's obama, but this is really a great idea and plan by Obama.

You are right it is a great bill, but you are wrong on it being a Obama bill. It was a cross party bill and was sponsored by Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) As far as I know all Obama did was sign it but I agree it is good for business and good for the environment. Whats not to like about that?

I think your argument is way off base. Americans want to drive reliable, newer cars. I have a piece of crap car that is worth $2 and I can trade it in on a new car and get $4500. I think Americans are smart enough to take free money. How many of those clunker are actually worth $4500 that are being traded in?

As a stimulus bill I do like it, however let's see how the numbers play out before we pass final judgment.

One problem I see is that people are trading in a free and clear auto (no payments) and picking up a rather large payment for the next 5 years as well as all the attendant costs assumed with a new auto (higher insurance premiums etc.)

Or people that don't need a $4,000+ tax credit are the ones using this.

We'll see.

This should be in the opinions section.

The bill was not proposed by Obama.

And it doesn't mean that people want fuel efficent cars. It means they want the money they get from trading in their old clunkers.

I think this program SUCKS!

The car dealer has to SCRAP any car that is traded in. It is nothing more than a BAILOUT for the auto makers.

The dealers are gonna end up getting screwed. The program is already out of money and the dealerships have already fronted (IAW the law) about 5 times the alotted funding. Which means that either the 1 billion dollar cash-for-clunkers program must become a 5 billion dollar cash-for-clunkers program, or else we're looking at another round of dealership closures and lawsuits because some moron in Washington didn't adequately fund their newest pet project.
It's also hurting the auto salvage industry, who rely on the profit from reselling the engines that the Feds have just ordered destroyed through this program.
/ someone didn't think their cunning plan all the way through.

Is that why it's already been suspended---just 6 days after it began??? It's just another freebie for people that won't help the environment at all, IMHO. Wonder how many "rich" people who were going to buy a new truck anyway have used it?

Government to Suspend 'Cash for Clunkers' Program

By Dana Hedgpeth
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 30, 2009; 9:14PM

The government's $1 billion "cash for clunkers" program, designed to boost stagnant auto sales, will be suspended at midnight Thursday because it is almost out of money just six days after it started.

Right. Here is a video of a scraping. Don't know how to embed but....

I wouldn't consider this Jeep a "clunker." The car dealer is required to drain the clunker's engine of oil, pour in sodium silicate, and start the engine to destroy it. Begin watching the video at 1:45 because that's when it starts smoking. So there's $4,500 of our tax dollars up in smoke.

HAHAHAH now he is calling it quits.

Success is counterproductive to Obama's mission.
