Default Libtraries closing thanks to GOP

Last fall, Congress failed to reauthorize a $400 million annual subsidy to 41 states to help rural counties prop up their local economies. Oregon took the biggest hit -- $150 million. Jackson County lost $23 million and had to slash everywhere, from reducing jail beds to cutting search and rescue teams.

That meant some hard choices, said Jackson County Administrator Danny Jordan.

"Losing libraries is a huge business deterrent -- who wants to move to a city that doesn't have libraries?" Jordan said. "But we decided we had to maintain public safety, which is already taking a $3.5 million cut. We won't be able to monitor misdemeanor sex offenders anymore. The hard reality is that libraries are not an option for us."

Entire library systems closing, misdemeanor sex offenders unmonitored...is there any facit of American life that the Gop did not screw up?

Hard to comment without details on the subsidy, although this raises an eyebrow:

If the subsidy goes to 41 states, why does Oregon alone receive 38%? Surely Oregon doesn't claim 38% of the rural population.

It sounds like this was just pork.

Default beware of the Feds controlling library funds !

My opinion is that local libraries should be supported by local governments which in turn are supported by local tax payers who in turn will have control over their own destiny. If we allow the Feds to control money at that level then the Feds control our local existance.

Here in Connecticut we have only 165 towns but virtually every town has its own schools. Only the very least populated of our towns have regional schools. We support our schools through local taxes as we do our libraries.

no, those are universal unitarian churches. sermons are similar to an hour long Stewart Smalley-like feel good session .

Default What!...Big Foot is not included?

Now, not long after all 15 branches were rebuilt or remodeled, every one will be shuttered in what's being called the largest library shutdown in the United States. The crisis in southern Oregon can be traced not only to changing funding priorities on Capitol Hill, but also to crooked railroad deals in the Wild West, a spotted owl and a shrinking timber harvest.

Libraries are obsolete for the average person. I hear the republicans have also stopped subsidizing the buggy whip industry.

Actually it was part of a land deal brokered by the federal gvt to pay for productive lands they took out of circulation....in short the GOP broke a deal that has been in place for generations.

Actually Conn. gets LSTA money which is federal money....

As to your schools they to receive federal funds for Title IV, hot lunch programs and the like as well.

Don't get me wrong connecticut is great (my mom took over a college out there and has doubled enrollment in just a few short years) but the state that really funds its libraries the most is Maryland. They have the best library funding in the nation and it shows.
