Default Abolish Compulsory Schooling

Brilliant piece against compulsory schooling on this website: http://asfar.org/papers/education.php

There's also a valuable resource here: http://www.school-survival.net/artic..._schooling.php. This was written by John Taylor Gatto. He was a prestigious award winning teacher until he decided that the compulsory school system was harmful to youth. I don't agree with the privatization aspect, but I agree with the concept of abandoning authoritarian schooling.

And finally, commentary from the psychologist Richard Farson on the issue: http://www.wbsi.org/farson/com_school_admin.htm

I'm not so sure I can agree. Many kids would not go to school if it wasn't compulsory and many parents wouldn't bother to make sure they did go to school. On the up side, this could be the solution to the illegal immigration problem. Before long, we'd have millions of uneducated Americans who's only marketable skills would be unskilled labor.

I read in the newspaper recently a father got put in jail for six months for not forcing his daughter to go to GED classes.

Absurd. Compulsory Schooling is asinine.

Because every kid, even if their parents are (*)(*)(*)(*)ed up, has the potential to make something of themselves even if it takes a push from the rest of us. To just ignore them makes us, as a society, as ignorant as their parents.

Where in the Constitution does it say that the government automatically becomes the surrogate parents of children whose real parents are inept, black, crack-heads and that the rest of the citizenry must chip in and pay for them?

The government is depriving children of their liberty by forcing them to attend school. The government is depriving citizens of their liberty and property by forcing them to pay for school and then not letting people choose where to go to school. Yes, this should be abolished. We should protect our natural rights.

It doesn't. There are things that we should do simply because it's the right thing to do. Educated citizens are the cornerstone of our society.

Our society was much better educated 150 years ago than it is now, and the federal government had little to do with it.

Word!

You mean back when the slaves were educated by their master and not left to fend for themselves on the street corner?
