Default Musharraf wins presidential vote

Quote:
Gen Pervez Musharraf has easily won a vote to be re-elected Pakistan's president, even though it is unclear if his candidacy was legal.
He won all but five of the votes cast in parliament's two houses and swept the ballots in the four provincial assemblies, election officials said.

Opposition MPs abstained or boycotted the vote, calling it unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court says no winner can be declared until it decides whether Gen Musharraf can stand while army chief.

"I bow my head in front of God Almighty for having given me such a great victory" --President Musharraf

In a statement shortly after results were announced, Gen Musharraf thanked those who had voted for him.

Dressed in civilian clothes, he appealed to people to end protests against his rule.

"And I again give my offer of reconciliation to all political parties."

'Flouted'

As expected, Gen Musharraf won by a landslide.

Good for Pakistan, good for the region, and good for the world.

Default ?

Yes, that's good.

Hopefully they won't succeed in taking it away from here.

I don't know what's more suprising Pakistan having an election or someone having the guts to run against him in the first place.

Default ...

It sounds good simply because Musharaf finally agreed to step down from his military position (largely seen as a major reason for his support).
I'm still not sure how good this is overall.
For one thing the people still seem to believe the military leadership is more important than the civilian leadership.
For another, if Musharaf had lost... was he hanging on to the military job for security... or because he would have had another coup? Thankfully we'll never have to know.
